Major Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the performance and documentation of all diagnostic procedures utilizing proper technical parameters to produce quality studies.
    • 1)Positions patient, adjusts equipment, secures immobilization and support devices as needed to perform procedures.
    • 2)Identifies each patient correctly prior to an exam procedure being performed, using two forms of identification, as indicated by the established Advocate Healthcare Time out protocol.
    • 3)Communicates effectively using AIDET with patients before, during and after exams to assure their comfort and cooperation. Provides explanation of delay for testing to patients who are waiting past their scheduled test times. Demonstrates good oral communications skills with patients, fellow associates, physicians and administration. Adheres to Standards of Behavior at all times.
    • 4)Responsible for database entry of appropriate exam charges, starting, completing and verifying each exam for appropriate interpretation by physician upon completion.
    • 5)Responsible for maintaining patient privacy while obtaining patient history and any pertinent continuing discussion.
    • 6)Adherence to proper handwashing technique at all times.
  • Perform associated data center /clerical duties as needed.
    • 1)Must be knowledgeable in all aspects of the day-to-day operation and organization of the Department of Radiology to include department policy and practices, scheduling, reception,and data center area
    • 2)Prepare transport requests as needed
    • 3)Schedule inpatients/outpatients as required and dictated by the ongoing patient schedules
    • 4)Assist patient to and from procedure area by prescribed means, transport patient as required
    • 5)Must know the duties, and may be required to perform the duties, of the reception desk and data center
    • 6)Must be able to complete and package a CD of images as requested.
  • Adherence to all accepted safety standards and practices to ensure patient safety and quality patient care.
    • 1)Maintains compliance with established safety standards to protect patients and staff at all times.
    • 2)Verifies inpatient and outpatient orders as established by the Time Out protocol.
    • 3)Uses appropriate lead markers as required
    • 4)Obtain consent indicating that patient is not pregnant. Obtain radiologist consent/input if patient pregnant.
    • 5).
  • Understand the operation, technique factors, and idiosyncrasies of function of commonly used radiographic systems in department. Maintains appropriate competencies as defined by the ACR, Established Regulatory Standards, IEMA and ASRT to and not to exclude any other formal regulatory recommended requirements and/or newly revised standards.
    • 1)Operates all radiographic equipment and can select and modify technical factors as needed to optimize image quality with lowest possible dose.
    • 2)Checks all equipment on a daily basis, inspects for physical hazards in assigned diagnostic rooms, portable units, c-arms and provides report to the ChargeTechnologist and Clincial Engineering of any malfunctions or hazards.
    • 3)Must be able to do job related problem solving such as malfunction of equipment, alternate patient positioning and views, realizing equipment or patient limitations.
  • Presenting and maintaining a professional standard
    • 1)Maintains positive guest relations and telephone ettiquette following departmental policies and procedures.
    • 2)Presents a consistently pleasant and cooperative demeanor to fellow associates and supervisor.
    • 3)Observes hospital/department guidelines concerning dress , display of name badge, radiation badge and appearance appropriate to the work environment.
    • 4)Avoids excessive absenteeism/tardiness so that attendance does not warrant repeated formal disciplinary action and /or disrupt department productivity.
    • 5)Compliance with Established Regulatory Standards, IDPH, IEMA, OSHA , ARRT and ASRT regulations is essential.
  • Operation of more advanced and sophisticated procedures to include surgical rotational support and fluoroscopy
    • 1)Operates portable radiographic equipment and Carm effectively in patient room, intensive care, GI lab and surgery.
    • 2)Performs set up in Surgery and GI Lab. Documents radiation dose and time use appropriately for all cases.
    • 3)Able to assist OR surgeon/GI lab with PACS related image viewing
    • 4)Assists radiologists with fluoroscopic procedures to include the more advanced and specialty procedures requiring addtional experience and knowledge.
    • 5)Complies with proper screening for allergies.


Education/Experience Required:

  • - Maintains active IEMA License - Minimum experience as a Radiologic Technologist, new grad accepted - Knowledge all areas of general diagnostic radiology


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • - Understanding of positioning and technique factors as in Merrill's Directory - Able to perform all common radiologic procedures
  • - ARRT Registry within one year employment - IEMA License


Physicial Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • - Able to respond to request to work on short notice - Flexible in starting times to meet demand - May require rotating shifts and alternate days - Willing to work overtime when requested - Able to periodically take call - As required, must be able to transport, move, and lift patients - Musculoskeletal hazard from large amount of job lifting - Musculoskeletal hazard from repetitive motions - May be exposed to ionizing radiation - May be exposed to infectious diseases
  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.


Addendum: NOTE: Comply with mandatory DeMedici Computer Program updates; Maintain CPR Certification; Must maintain professional decorum, and adhere to dress code as required by department; no deviations allowed.
