About the Role

As we embark on a groundbreaking regional research initiative and continue building on some 50 years of research and development, we are expanding our dedicated Forest Research Centre team and have a unique opportunity for a passionate Cross-Cultural Research Scientist to join us to deliver critical projects connecting science and cultural knowledge.  

In this role, you will engage with Traditional Owners, Regional and Local Aboriginal Corporations to co-design research that will focus on identifying improvements in environmental management of Alcoa's operations and surrounding areas by embedding cultural knowledge systems. You will work collaboratively with Alcoa technical teams, Indigenous Ranger Programs, students and external research scientists to deliver the co-designed research programs that will address five key research themes for the Centre across Cultural Land Management, Flora, Fauna, Rehabilitation and Water.

The role's core elements are:

  • Cultural Sensitivity: Ensuring Free, Prior and Informed Consent is adhered to, and following best practice guidelines on co-design with Indigenous peoples including Intellectual Property management.

  • Research Execution: Undertaking research projects on topics important to Traditional Owners, such as management for culturally significant flora and fauna species and traditional land management practices.

  • Governance & Continuous Improvement: Establishing governance structures to oversee selection and execution of research projects.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Identifying opportunities for external collaboration and using existing and new networks to engage researchers.

  • Knowledge Sharing: Communicating learnings to internal and external stakeholders at meetings and conferences.

What you can bring to the role

  • PhD or Masters by Research in cross-cultural studies, environmental science, sustainability, or related field.

  • Relevant research or co-design experience involving communication and collaboration with Indigenous Peoples.

  • Demonstrated understanding of Free, Prior and Informed Consent, and Intellectual Property management.

  • Experience as a knowledge broker between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples and organisations.

  • Previous exposure to supervision of staff and students with an ability to deliver work with diverse stakeholders.

  • Strong communication skills including delivering presentations, and publishing reports and papers.

  • WA Drivers Licence will be required to travel across various sites, to the Forest and to be on Country.
