About the Role

As an Environmental Approvals Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of responsible mining at Alcoa and your expertise will be critical in assessing potential environmental impacts, developing mitigation strategies and securing approvals. In this role, you will work collaboratively with project teams, government agencies and stakeholders to facilitate the approvals process and promote environmentally and socially responsible practices.

Your key activities and contributions will be:

  • Conducting thorough assessments of project proposals to identify potential environmental risks and regulatory requirements.

  • Overseeing the preparation and submission of applications for environmental approvals, in accordance with Part IV of the EP Act and the EPBC Act.

  • Engaging with regulatory authorities, EPA, DWER and DCCEEW to facilitate the approvals process and address any queries or concerns.

  • Collaborating with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to develop effective environmental assessment and mitigation measures.

  • Providing guidance and support to project teams on compliance with environmental regulations and best practices.

  • Staying abreast of changes to environmental legislation and regulatory requirements, in particular the Nature Positive Reforms, and advise the Approvals Manager – Part IV/EPBC on potential implications for projects.

  • Supporting continuous improvement of environmental approval processes and procedures within the organisation.

What you can bring to the role

  • Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science or related fields of study.

  • Substantial experience in supporting environmental approvals processes in industry, Government or within an environmental consultancy context with a specific focus on the EPBC Act.

  • Strong understanding of Commonwealth and Western Australian environmental legislation, regulations, and approval processes.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to make sound, logical and balanced judgements.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver high-quality results within tight timeframes.

  • An analytical and detail-oriented mindset with the ability to solve complex environmental challenges.
