Pre-Silicon Performance Modeling Engineer

Job Title: Pre-Silicon Performance Modeling Engineer

Job Level: Member of Technical Staff (MTS)

Location: Bengaluru, India

Job Overview:

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Pre-Silicon Performance Modeling Engineer to join our cutting-edge SoC architecture and design team. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in performance modeling, simulation, and projections, with a focus on analyzing, optimizing, and predicting system performance to meet product goals. This role involves close collaboration with architecture, design, and validation teams to shape the next generation of high-performance, power-efficient SoCs.

Key Responsibilities:

Performance Modeling and Simulation

  • Develop, enhance, and maintain detailed performance models for SoC subsystems and full-system architectures.
  • Simulate real-world workloads to analyze performance bottlenecks, power trade-offs, and system behavior.
  • Build and validate analytical and cycle-accurate models to predict performance across various configurations.

Workload Characterization

  • Analyze diverse workloads, including application benchmarks and customer use cases, to determine system performance requirements.
  • Create synthetic workloads and test cases to stress specific system components and validate model accuracy.

Performance Projections and Analysis

  • Generate accurate performance projections for new SoC architectures and features.
  • Perform trade-off analysis to evaluate architectural options, including core configurations, cache hierarchies, memory subsystems, and interconnects.
  • Collaborate with power modeling teams to understand and balance performance-per-watt metrics.

Collaboration and Influence

  • Work closely with architects, RTL designers, and firmware engineers to ensure alignment of performance targets across hardware and software layers.
  • Provide actionable insights to guide architectural decisions and influence SoC design specifications.
  • Partner with marketing teams to validate performance claims and create data-driven content for product positioning.

Tools and Methodologies

  • Develop or enhance performance modeling tools and frameworks to improve simulation speed, accuracy, and scalability.
  • Maintain robust documentation and best practices for performance modeling workflows.

Debugging and Issue Resolution

  • Identify and debug discrepancies between performance model results and silicon behavior.
  • Continuously refine models to improve accuracy based on post-silicon data and lessons learned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education:

Bachelor's or master's degree in computer engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (Ph.D. preferred).

  • Technical Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of SoC architecture, including CPU, GPU, memory hierarchy, interconnects, and accelerators.
    • Expertise in performance modeling tools and simulation frameworks (e.g., SystemC, Gem5, or proprietary tools).
    • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, or MATLAB for model development and automation.
    • In-depth understanding of performance metrics, bottleneck analysis, and workload characterization.
  • Experience:
    • 10+ years of experience in performance modeling or SoC architecture.
    • Experience working with both analytical and cycle-accurate models.
    • Proven ability to project performance for pre-silicon designs and validate against silicon results.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with power modeling and energy-efficiency optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware simulators, emulators, or FPGA prototypes.
  • Knowledge of industry-standard benchmarks (e.g., SPEC, Dhrystone) and real-world workload behavior.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
