Description

WHAT YOU DO AT AMD CHANGES EVERYTHING

We care deeply about transforming lives with AMD technology to enrich our industry, our communities, and the world. Our mission is to build great products that accelerate next-generation computing experiences – the building blocks for the data center, artificial intelligence, PCs, gaming and embedded. Underpinning our mission is the AMD culture. We push the limits of innovation to solve the world's most important challenges. We strive for execution excellence while being direct, humble, collaborative, and inclusive of diverse perspectives.

AMD together we advance_

THE ROLE:

AMD is looking for an influential data architect who is passionate about designing, implementing, and validating data platforms at scale to support critical engineering workflows. You will be a member of a core team of incredibly talented industry specialists and will work with the very latest hardware and software technology.

This is a dynamic and fast-paced engineering environment where you will lead the definition and development of data repositories, data pipelines, and data analysis solutions (including some related to machine learning applications) to support automation frameworks that help AMD validate its HW/FW/SW.

THE PERSON:

The ideal candidate should be passionate about data architecture and software engineering. They should possess the technical and leadership skills to drive state-of-the-art architectures that not only support efficient and scalable storage of large amounts of structured and unstructured data but also enable solutions for batch and real-time analysis.

The candidate must be able to define an architecture to address a given problem and build on-prem and/or cloud-based proofs of concept that can quickly be put into production. In some cases, the home-grown solution may be supported by engineering teams in their own labs, while in other cases, the solution must be designed and hosted in collaboration with the wider AMD IT organization, satisfying different enterprise requirements. The candidate must be able to support both types of scenarios.

Finally, the candidate must be able to communicate effectively and work optimally with different teams across AMD.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Architect and implement scalable, secure, and high-performance data platforms to support engineering data workflows (from data storage to data analysis).

    • These solutions will range from small on-prem/satellite installations with a few GBs of data to large-scale geo-distributed repositories that can handle multiple TBs of data.
  • Design and optimize data models, storage solutions, and access patterns for structured and unstructured data.

    • This includes acting as a consultant/advisor to refactor legacy software frameworks, as well as designing and developing new solutions from scratch—helping define the data platform roadmap and technology stack.
  • Understand the domain of the data in depth to dictate how automation frameworks must write validation artifacts, logs, test results, etc., to enable scalability, performance, and efficient analysis.

    • Ultimately, the architecture will be measured by how effectively it provides insights to users.
  • This is a hands-on role where the candidate not only proposes architecture but also helps put it together with the help of junior engineers; including detailed design, implementation, and validation while establishing performance benchmarks and enabling security and privacy.

  • Lead the development of batch and real-time processing via data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes using open-source (preferred) and cloud-native technologies.

  • Collaborate with software and hardware validation teams, as well as other AMD teams (e.g., IT), to understand requirements and translate them into robust technical solutions.

  • Define and enforce data governance, quality, and lifecycle management best practices.

  • Mentor junior engineers.

  • Stay informed of software and hardware trends and innovations, especially those related to data storage and analysis systems. Become an evangelist for the team and AMD, promoting best practices and industry standards.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Demonstrated mastery of data architecture, data modeling, and software engineering principles, with several years of proven experience designing and implementing large-scale data repositories and analytics solutions.

  • Proficiency with open-source and/or closed-source data technologies used for data storage, pipelines, and analysis (e.g., Spark, Databricks, ELK, Logstash, Kafka, Redis, SQL vs. NoSQL databases such as MongoDB, object storage, Grafana, Superset, etc.).

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).

  • Ability to write high-quality code with keen attention to detail. Programming languages may include Python, JavaScript, Linux/Windows shells, etc., as well as database query and domain-specific languages.

  • Pluses:

    • Some of the data will be used in AI/ML solutions. Hence, understanding data architecture and solutions for AI/ML will be useful (e.g., how to build databases for embeddings).
    • In some domains, we deal with HPC systems where validation data resides in HPC-oriented repositories. Understanding common HPC storage patterns could be helpful (e.g., differences between NFS and Lustre).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

  • Ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and drive architectural decisions.

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
OTHER LOCATIONS:
  • Seattle Washington Area
