Position Summary  

The Communication Studies Department is in need of a part-time human communication generalist to teach various courses, such as CMST&101: Introduction to Communication and CMST&220: Public Speaking, in face-to-face and hybrid modalities. We are in need of a faculty member to teach in the Spring 2026 Quarter. We will also hold CVs for 18 months in the event of future staffing needs.

A successful candidate will have experience successfully teaching at the college level, demonstrate the ability to teach students with varying needs, and hold (at minimum) a Master¿s degree in Speech, Communication, Communication Studies, or Speech Communication.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment. 

Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $6,418.75 - $7,824.66. Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

Generous benefits package for eligible employees is offered through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents; choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc. Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter. 

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

About the Department  

The Communication Studies Department is part of the Arts & Humanities Division at Bellevue College. We offer courses in 3 main areas of the field: human communication & rhetoric, mass media & journalism, and film studies. 

Essential Functions  
  • Teach at least one 5-credit lecture course. Class size ranges from 28-32 students.
  • Teach communication studies courses spanning the department offerings as assigned.
  • Teach in face-to-face settings and/or asynchronous virtual settings (for hybrid courses).
  • Prepare course materials, including varied assessments of student knowledge.
  • Design and facilitate learning experiences centered around student needs and interests by using varied instruction methods and resources.
  • Hold weekly office hours in accordance with the current faculty contract and generally assist students in person one-on-one and/or both through electronic media and in-person.
  • Use data, self-reflection, and student/colleague feedback to revise your instruction, improve student success and better serve students at our open enrollment institution.
  • Grade and/or provide useful feedback to students in a way that promotes student understanding and improvement. 
  • Assign overall course grades.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to student success through fostering a positive and caring learning environment where understanding and communicating across differences is valued and practiced.
     
Minimum Qualifications  
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in Speech, Communication, Communication Studies, or Speech Communication.
  • Preparation relevant to or experience teaching the 100-200 college-level courses in human communication, particularly Introduction to Communication (covering interpersonal, small group, and public speaking content) and Public Speaking.
  • Ability to teach face-to-face on campus.
  • Experience with and dedication to incorporating educational equity into teaching practices to address students with varying needs, including neurodiverse students, those with physical and learning disabilities, and those from differing socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Effective communication skills with students, peers, and supervisors.
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Documented successful college teaching in communication studies
  • Experience with community college teaching and a sincere interest in student success and retention in an open enrollment institution with multi-cultural, multi-ability classrooms
  • Comprehension and successful implementation of concepts related to teaching and learning theory, student engagement, curriculum development, and assessment of learning outcomes
  • Ability to teach a wide range of courses in human communication (particularly workplace, healthcare, and/or intercultural communication).
  • Evidence of effective teaching in classrooms at the college level in various modes (face-to-face, hybrid, online).
