Position Summary  

The Engineering Sciences Department at Bellevue College is accepting applications for a part-time position as an engineering instructor. We seek a collaborative and equity-minded individual committed to teaching effectiveness and closing opportunity gaps. Particularly desired are applicants with interest and experience in some combination of engineering instruction, industry experience, and building an inclusive environment for students from diverse backgrounds. This position will be to teach Engineering fundamental courses. Typically, we will be hiring for specific courses (see Essential Functions below); the most common will be Statics, Dynamics, Mechanics of Materials.

Faculty should be prepared to teach assigned courses during the day or evening, based on program and student needs.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment.

Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $6,418.75 - $7,824.66. Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

Generous benefits package for eligible employees is offered through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents; choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc. Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter.

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

About the Department  

The Engineering Sciences Program is within the School of Science and currently consists of one full-time faculty and one quarterly-contracted adjunct faculty. Approximately, 10 to 12 section are offered annually. Most courses are offered during the day; however, the program is committed to evening availability for working students to have access to classes. Engineering instruction and course content is established to maintain transfer equivalency to local engineering four-year school curriculum.

Courses generally meet for 4 hours per week together with the office hour requirements that are noted in the current contract. The majority of students in the program are pursuing Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering disciplines. Members of the department participate in professional activities at Bellevue College and at the regional and national levels. Our focus is to prepare students for success at their transfer institution and initiating their professional development.

Essential Functions  
  • Teach an engineering fundamentals lecture class. Class sizes are typically 28 students. Current offerings include: Statics, Dynamics, Mechanics of Materials, Thermodynamics, Electrical Circuits or Engineering Graphics.
  • Teach in face-to-face settings and/or hybrid in-person/virtual settings.
  • Prepare course materials, including varied assessments of student knowledge.
  • Actively engage students in critical thinking, meta-cognitive processes, and advancement of critical essential communication skills by using varied instructional methods and resources.
  • Maintain regular communication with students.
  • Grade and/or provide useful feedback to students in a way that promotes student understanding and improvement. Assign overall course grades.
  • Hold weekly office hours in accordance with the current faculty contract and generally assist students in person one-on-one and/or both through electronic media and in-person.
  • Use data, self-reflection, and student/colleague feedback to revise your instruction, improve student success, and better serve historically underserved, underrepresented, or marginalized student populations (e.g. students with disabilities, black and indigenous students of color, first-generation college students, LGBTQIA+ students, veterans, English language learners, etc.).
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to student success through fostering a positive and caring learning environment where diversity and pluralism are valued.
Minimum Qualifications  
  • A master's degree in engineering or a bachelor's degree in engineering and related industry experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and other members of the college community.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to students and staff of varied ethnicity, age, background and ability, and a commitment to achieving educational success in a culturally diverse environment;
  • Experience with and dedication to incorporating educational equity into teaching practices to address the needs of students of varied identities and backgrounds, and closing opportunity gaps for historically marginalized students.
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Prior teaching experience, which may include college-level instruction, graduate teaching assistantships, or other related teaching experience.
  • Experience with community college teaching and a sincere interest in student success in an open enrollment institution.
  • Demonstrated professional practice or practitioner experience in the engineering industry, bringing applied insights to college teaching.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute to the academic community.
  • Familiarity with Learning Management System such as Canvas.
