Position Summary

The Healthy Campus Project promotes wellness and health equity through education and outreach. Advocates work in key health areas to engage the campus community in health promotion activities. The project fosters a culture of wellness and inclusivity across campus.  The Healthy Campus Advocate plays a key role in supporting the Healthy Campus Project by designing and leading initiatives that engage the campus community in health promotion activities and events. Each advocate will focus on one of five key health areas:

  • Mental Health and Wellness: focuses on promoting emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It involves raising awareness about mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and stress management, while encouraging practices like mindfulness, self-care, and access to mental health services.
  • Chronic Disease Prevention: focuses on preventing long-term health conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. Efforts include promoting healthy lifestyles, routine screenings, and understanding the role of social determinants in chronic disease risk.
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health: covers education on topics related to sexual health, reproductive rights, and healthy relationships. It includes information on birth control, abortion care, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), LGBTQIA+ health, consent, and sexual health services. Advocacy for accessible, inclusive, and stigma-free reproductive healthcare is central to this role.
  • Physical Health & Nutrition: Emphasizes maintaining overall physical health through proper nutrition, exercise, and a positive body image. It includes promoting balanced diets, healthy eating habits, body positivity, and addressing issues like eating disorders and unhealthy body standards. Encouraging self-acceptance and physical activity for all body types is a key component.
  • Tobacco, Alcohol, & Drug Prevention: Focuses on educating the campus community about the risks associated with tobacco, alcohol, and drug use. It includes promoting prevention strategies, understanding addiction, harm reduction practices, and connecting students to support services for substance use or recovery.

Advocates will be cross-trained in all health areas to foster collaboration on projects and ensure a holistic approach to health promotion. This provides students with a well-rounded understanding of health issues and prepares them to work on interdisciplinary health initiatives.
