Position Summary
The Interior Design program is seeking qualified candidates to fill Interior Design Lighting Instructor position. The instructor will teach lighting design for interiors to third-year Interior Design baccalaureate students. Must instruct students in contemporary lighting design and related studio practices and processes and have experience teaching or directing others in professional practices, methodologies, skills, and content related to lighting design for commercial and other interior project types.
The instructor will maintain current expertise in lighting design for interior and architectural design practice, and create an active learning, project-based curriculum for students. Instruction will include industry standard technology and tools, applying relevant interior building and energy codes and systems, visual communication methods, project management, and various methods of design inquiry.
The instructor will give students opportunities to learn about common lighting design consulting practices through industry contacts and field learning experiences.
Candidates with NCQLP-LC, NCIDQ, AIA, LEED, and other industry-specific credentials are strongly encouraged to apply
Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment.
Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $6050.05 - $7375.17. Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

About the DepartmentBellevue College has one of the largest interior design programs in the state of Washington. The CIDA-accredited program provides students with a broad foundation in fine arts and design, skill-based practice, and critical thinking experiences. The curriculum offers rigorous and varied methods of design investigation, including exposure to a variety of interior project types and relevant design problems. Our program currently enrolls over 300 full- and part-time students, historically graduating an average of 30 to 50 students per year. The program attracts students with diverse cultural and academic backgrounds, with half of our students employed while they are enrolled, and many returning students who are preparing for or reacting to career or life changes. Currently, we have 5 full-time faculty members and many talented adjunct instructors, all with diverse academic backgrounds and practice-based experience, and a dedication to student success.
Essential Functions- Conduct equitable teaching and promote learning excellence in the Interior Design department via grounded, online, or hybrid course delivery.
- Foster a positive and caring learning community where diversity and pluralism are advanced.
- Promote creative and critical thinking through a variety of applied and project-based learning methods.
- Provide verbal and written assessment of student learning outcomes.
- Establish and maintain weekly office hours to assist students with coursework and classroom-related questions.
- Review and update assigned courses to ensure currency of information, appropriate pedagogy, and implementation of student learning outcomes that achieve CIDA accreditation standards.
- Maintain knowledge and skills in teaching, in the interior and lighting design discipline, and in cultural receptivity.
- Collaborate and effectively communicate with Interior Design program chair and other instructors to support overall program success.
- Participate in all College-required faculty training.
- Support the college's Pluralism and Diversity initiative and Student Success initiative by integrating related concepts into class activities and departmental programs.
- Bachelor's degree from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
- A degree in interior design, architecture, interior architecture, environmental design, or other lighting design-related degree.
- Three (3) years of professional experience in lighting design for interior design, architecture, interior architecture, or environmental design projects.
- Project-based expertise in commercial and residential projects, including lighting concept development, interior lighting installation details and specifications, lighting fixture selection and specification, lighting controls, energy codes, visual communication, client contact, project management, and collaborating with design development teams.
- Experience creating deliverables and presentation materials using industry-standard digital design software such as Revit, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, and Bluebeam; specialized lighting software such as AGI32; and using virtual collaboration and other online communication tools.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse students and colleagues in a collaborative and inclusive environment.
- Effective communication skills.
- Leadership experience, such as training design teams with diverse backgrounds and skill levels, and/or implementing standards of practice in a project team or office in an inclusive and collaborative manner.
- NCQLP-LC (National Council on Qualifications for Lighting Professionals - Lighting Certified)
- Active affiliation with professional lighting organizations, such as IESNA, and other professional design organizations, such as AIA, IIDA, etc.
- Familiarity with CIDA standards, NCIDQ certification, and their relevance to interior design education and practice.
- Graduate degree in interior design, architecture, interior architecture, environmental design, illuminating engineering, or other relevant discipline; preferably from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
- Experience forming an interior design curriculum or professional training that considers environmental, social, and economic design sustainability, and familiarity with industry standard organizations and certifications (e.g. IESNA, GBC, LFI, LEED, etc.).
