Position Summary  

The Python instructor is entrusted with delivering a top-tier educational experience for Python programming courses. Key duties encompass the regular updating of the curriculum, creation of dynamic courses, and provision of student support, both in group settings and one-on-one. Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, software engineering, or a related field, and a strong proficiency in Python programming. Demonstrated communication and presentation skills are essential. Candidates with a Master's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, teaching certifications or relevant educational training, and experience teaching Python or a similar programming language in a college or continuing education setting will be given preference.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment. 

Compensation is $42.77 - $80 per hour. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

Generous benefits package for eligible employees is offered through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents; choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc. Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter. 

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

Are you passionate about Python programming and have a knack for developing engaging and effective learning materials? Do you possess in-depth knowledge of Python syntax, data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, libraries (like NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib), and best practices in Python development? Essential Functions  
  • Update and maintain the curriculum for engaging and informative Python programming courses that align with the needs of adult learners and industry standards.
  • Develop engaging courses, lesson plans, teaching aids, assessments, and hands-on exercises.
  • Meet all scheduled classes promptly with any deviation being filed promptly and accurately through the appropriate channels.
  • Motivate students to actively participate in all aspects of the educational process.
  • Provide one-on-one and group mentoring to support students in their learning journey.
  • Address student questions and provide guidance on courses' content.
  • Maintain expertise in subject area and ensure curriculum content remains up-to-date and relevant by staying updated with the latest developments in the Python ecosystem, new libraries, changes in the language, and industry applications and incorporating them into the course content and activities.
  • Participate in departmental and college meetings as prescribed by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications  
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, software engineering, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated strong proficiency in Python programming including proficiency in Python 3 with a deep understanding of its principles, libraries and frameworks such as NumPy, pandas, matplotlib, scikit-learn, Django, and Flask, and applications.
  • Demonstrated communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate learning of students/colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Master's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field.
  • Teaching certifications or relevant educational training.
  • Prior experience teaching Python or a similar programming language in a college or continuing education setting.
  • Familiarity with instructional technology and e-learning platforms.
  • Experience in developing course materials and curriculum design.
  • Experience with other programming languages, software development, or related technical fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach about the ethical use of programming and the importance of considering the societal impact of technology.
  • Contributions to the Python community, such as open-source projects or publications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Python's role as a preferred language for artificial intelligence development.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and inspire learners at different levels of experience.
