Job Description:

The Assistant Director, Editorial and Creative Content serves as Advancement Communications' primary editorial and creative collateral content strategist, creating materials and features for web, email, and print distribution that support the Division of Advancement's mission and align with established University frameworks, priorities, and digital engagement initiatives—with a focus on web content and creative or advertising/promotional communications, event, or fundraising collateral. Reporting to the Director, of Content Strategy and Planning and part of a creative team, the Assistant Director is a strong collaborator, working closely with designers, project managers, other content creators, and strategists to ensure the highest quality and effectiveness.

The Assistant Director creates compelling content in support of the strategic goals of the Division's platforms and publications. The Assistant Director collaborates on strategic planning and execution of storytelling and advertising efforts. Along with other team members, the Assistant Director consults with Advancement Division partner units and creates communications and materials that support unit-level goals, including fundraising, promotional, and event materials for alumni and donor audiences. The Assistant Director also partners with units on messaging and creative content/collateral for priority fundraising and engagement initiatives and events and works to ensure coordination of activities across related communications and marketing efforts. In addition, the Assistant Director provides editorial support for other communications pieces as needed and collaborates on the creation of resources and initiatives that support the team as well as Division communicators in their roles.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in a related field such as media, communications, marketing and/or education.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly produce and edit copy for a variety of platforms, along with demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines with quality work. 

  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong relationships and coordinate among various partners and constituencies, both internal and external, to establish and further collaborative initiatives.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in developing and distributing integrated communications strategies and content for web, print, and social channels.

  • Experience with measuring digital content (including web, email, and social media), managing an editorial calendar, and leveraging emerging technologies to meet communications goals.

  • Experience with web, email, and social media platforms, publishing and content management systems

  • Strong storytelling and interviewing skills

  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite programs

  • Experience collecting, reporting, measuring, and analyzing web, email, and social media data analytics and familiarity with related tools, such as Google Analytics. Ability to assess content performance as a basis for planning.

  • Familiarity with laws and statutes governing privacy, copyright, fair use, and other areas of intellectual property as it pertains to distributing content

  • Proficiency in G-Suite (Google Drive, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides).

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Familiarity with team collaboration and project management tools like Slack and ClickUp

  • Experience in an advancement or higher education setting or with philanthropy and engagement communications

  • Basic knowledge of SEO, HTML/CSS, and web design best practices

  • Ability to manage multiple, concurrent projects, while maintaining quality, creativity and attention to detail. Ability to work well under deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently and proactively; work effectively in a group and as a member of a project team.

  • Strong visual aesthetic and familiarity with preparing content and images for digital publication.
