Job Description:

The Associate Director of the Center for Middle East Studies (CMES) provides leadership in support of the Center's research initiatives, public programming agenda, community outreach, and undergraduate curriculum. They will collaborate with CMES-affiliated faculty, postdocs, and students on research projects, assisting with fundraising and grant-writing as well assist with the Center's outreach strategy and the preparation of reports and proposals.

The Associate Director serves as a resource to the Faculty Director as well as visiting faculty members, postdoctoral scholars, and visiting research fellows. They will also act as a liaison with faculty members and graduate students affiliated with CMES, helping to cultivate new research projects and initiatives. This position is one of several key points of contact for undergraduate students interested in concentrating in MES and will  help advise pre- and post-declaration undergraduate students, and oversee the capstone and honors program. Through extensive outreach to affiliated departmental undergraduates the incumbent will help nurture and grow the concentration. The Associate Director will also offer one course a year in support of the concentration's curriculum.

The Associate Director will oversee the Center's staff and collaborate with the Center Manager to ensure the smooth operation of CMES, its finances, staffing, events, and publicity. They will attend meetings of the CMES Steering Committee.

Job Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a field related to Middle East Studies.
  • Minimum of five years academic experience in the combined areas of administration, teaching, and research.  Five years of high level administrative experience in a University environment or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Native or near-native fluency in a Middle Eastern language.
  • Deep knowledge of the intellectual content and research trends of the field of Middle East Studies, in both its social sciences and humanities dimensions.
  • Ability to design and teach a methods/reading seminar that provides an overview of canonical and new approaches to the study of the Middle East.
  • Demonstrated capacity for management and project oversight.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to organize and sustain international collaborative initiatives with individual scholars and institutions.
  • Superior communication skills (oral and written).
  • Ability to understand and operate in a complex campus environment and to create collaborative networks across multiple constituencies.
  • Demonstrated capacity for staff management, project and program oversight, financial and strategic planning.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
  • Ability to use technology and institutional databases and learn new software as needed including desktop publishing.
  • Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.
