The City Operations team is looking for a dedicated Crew Leader/Gardener to help maintain and enhance our city's vibrant green spaces. This dual-role position offers a unique opportunity to provide hands-on leadership during the busy growing season and expert mentorship during the winter months. From April to October, you will lead parks crews in executing work plans and maintaining high standards of horticultural care. During the winter season, your focus shifts to supporting horticultural operations through specialized tasks like pruning and team mentorship. You will be responsible for setting daily priorities, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and managing equipment resources effectively. Your work directly impacts the beauty and health of our local environment, ensuring our public spaces remain welcoming and well-maintained. This role is perfect for a proactive leader who enjoys a mix of supervisory duties and hands-on field work.

What will you do?

Crew Leader (April to October)

  • Set daily priorities and implement work plans according to standard operating procedures and hazard assessments
  • Support the hiring process by assisting with recruiting, screening, interviewing, and onboarding new team members
  • Conduct seasonal staff performance evaluations and participate in regular safety or tailgate meetings
  • Assign equipment resources necessary for the successful execution of daily work plans
  • Identify resources required for tasks while monitoring production and maintaining a safe work environment
  • Ensure all staff certifications are up-to-date and participate in mentoring and training new employees
  • Monitor staff attendance and performance, identifying any issues that require the Supervisor's attention
  • Implement and monitor corporate safety programs to ensure policies and best practices are met
  • Other related duties as required

Gardener (November to March)

  • Participate in winter operations, including shrub bed maintenance, winter pruning, and chipper operations
  • Operate and perform general maintenance on specialized tools and equipment, such as chainsaws and chippers
  • Utilize a variety of hand and power tools, including loppers, hedgers, and bush blades, while performing required hazard assessments
  • Perform on-site competency training and testing for field staff regarding plant identification, equipment operation, and proper planting techniques
  • Decide the best operational management approach for various horticultural sites, including soil nutrient and irrigation management
  • Lead major renovations of planting areas and collaborate with other gardeners on special interest sites
  • Review internal and external designs for horticultural operations and make recommendations for service level requirements
  • Prepare and maintain essential work records, reports, and equipment time sheets
  • Other related duties as required
