The City of Edmonton is seeking an Environmental Engineer to join our Environment and Climate Resilience team. High Level Overview of the position:

Reporting to the Senior Environmental Engineer, the Environmental Engineer serves as an essential interface for the corporate Environmental Management Team (Enviso) and acts as a primary contact for regulatory authorities, auditors, and internal project teams. This role is responsible for preparing and authenticating professional engineering work products, conducting environmental compliance reviews, and managing regulatory permits and approvals registers. You will provide technical advice across city departments to help achieve corporate environmental objectives, climate resilience targets, and asset management strategies. Additionally, you will oversee environmental incident investigations, monitor key performance metrics, and support continuous improvement within our ISO 14001 framework.

What will you do?

  • Research, prepare, and authenticate Professional Work Products (PWPs) including compliance audit reports, monitoring reports, environmental management plans, and regulatory applications
  • Provide professional technical peer reviews for environmental monitoring programs, regulatory applications, and reports managed across operational areas
  • Serve as a primary technical contact for external regulatory bodies, including Alberta Environment & Protected Areas, Environment Canada, and EPCOR
  • Coordinate regulatory permit and approval registers, tracking systems, and required statutory submittals
  • Lead and support continual improvement activities for the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (Enviso)
  • Investigate environmental non-compliances, conduct root-cause analyses, and track corrective action plans
  • Deliver expert technical advice to internal teams regarding environmental objectives, climate adaptation policies, and risk mitigation strategies
  • Oversee outsourced consultants and contractors, managing project scopes, deliverables, quality assurance, and project budgets
  • Support emergency preparedness planning and lead operational control training for internal partners
  • Coach and mentor junior technical staff, environmental coordinators, and engineering students on assigned projects
Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental, Civil, Chemical, or a related field of Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation in good standing and registered with APEGA, or eligibility for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) prior to appointment
  • Minimum of 4 years of hands-on engineering experience in the following areas: environmental management systems, environmental assessment, and environmental permitting
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible workplace experience in technical civil engineering, water resource management, environmental compliance, or provincial and municipal infrastructure projects
  • Demonstrated knowledge in project management with experience overseeing projects related to environmental regulatory compliance for operation, maintenance, or construction of municipal infrastructure. This includes environmental regulatory management, including strategic planning and securing federal, provincial, and municipal approvals
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of ISO14001 or other related ISO standards and regulatory framework applicable to municipal government
  • Experience supervising professional and technical staff providing professional technical peer review to support regulatory applications, reports, and environmental monitoring to meet the requirements of federal and provincial legislation

Assets:

  • Proven experience preparing and authenticating technical engineering reports and managing complex regulatory compliance requirements
  • Proven experience managing and maintaining environmental regulatory permits and approvals registers, tracking systems, and submittals
  • Significant working knowledge of relevant environmental laws, regulations, standards, and best management practices
  • Proven experience with environmental incident investigation, risk assessment, and navigating federal and provincial online regulatory platforms such as Digital Regulatory Assurance System (DRAS), Online Permitting and Clearance (OPaC), Aboriginal Consultation Office Digital Service (ACO DS), Electronic Disposition System (EDS), etc.

  • Excellent time management skills with a proven track record of handling multiple high-priority tasks under tight deadlines

Conditions of Employment:

  • Maintain active Professional Engineer (P.Eng) registration with APEGA in good standing
  • Compliance with corporate safety standards, including participating in site inspections and utilizing required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

Work Environment:

  • Hybrid work arrangement combining professional office environments with field inspections and site visits
  • Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions, uneven terrain, construction sites, and operational facilities requiring personal protective equipment
