As a Gardener specializing in Horticulture, you will act as a vital technical advisor and trainer for our maintenance teams. Reporting to the Crew and Team Leaders, you will provide expert guidance on industry best practices and enhanced horticultural services throughout the year. You will spend a significant portion of your time in the field, mentoring seasonal staff and ensuring maintenance techniques meet our high standards. Beyond hands-on work, you will perform site assessments and provide recommendations for landscape renovations and equipment upgrades. Your expertise will directly influence the seasonal planning of annual flower designs and shrub replacements. Ultimately, your role is to balance technical excellence with operational efficiency to improve the overall condition of the city's horticultural inventory.

What will you do?

  • Provide field-level instruction and training to maintenance crews on operational best practices
  • Perform specialized horticultural tasks including planting, transplanting, weeding, mulching, pruning and Integrated Pest Management
  • Conduct site assessments and recommend remedial actions to ensure landscapes are functional and beautiful
  • Act as a mentor to seasonal Labourer staff, teaching efficient maintenance techniques and horticultural knowledge
  • Assist with seasonal planning for annual flower designs, shrub replacements, and project plans for renovations
  • Provide expert advice on the selection of plant varieties, pruning techniques, and soil amendments
  • Operate and maintain specialized tools and equipment, and provide competency testing for staff on mechanical equipment like line trimmers, reciprocators, bush blades, hedgers, chainsaws and rototillers
  • Research new tools and industry trends to recommend updates for standard operating procedures
  • Other related duties as required
