What will you do?

  • The primary function of this role will be the construction and repair of playground features such as; playground apparatus, surfaces, wood and concrete structures, slides, and other related equipmentComplete scheduled playground and other playspace inspections 
  • Construct and maintain green shacks
  • Assisting in the delivery of various capital work that relates to playground refurbishment/construction, repair and equipment installation 
  • Scheduling and completing playground inspections 
  • Other work as required such as, construction and repair of parkland assets such as; park furniture (tables and benches, picnic stoves), and other various utility work 
  • Park servicing tasks such as; use of a pressure washer, garbage removal and sanitation duties 
  • Operate and being responsible for the minor maintenance of one or more of the following types of equipment: various sizes in trucks, front end loader, water pumps, generators and varied power/hand tools 
  • Maintain simple records 
  • Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications

  • Completion of the 10th grade or higher
  • A minimum of 1 year of related experience in parks operations 
  • Standard or Emergency First Aid Certificate

Assets: 

  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector Certification from The Canadian Playground Safety Institute or ability to obtain within 6 months of starting in this role
  • Experience operating equipment such as; utility vehicles, tractors, sweepers, skid steers, lanyard training or other related equipment of similar size and complexity
  • WHMIS 2015 Certification
  • Ability to read construction drawings

Skills required for Success:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Some knowledge of safety precautions and hazards involved with parks maintenance 
  • Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform manual labour for extended periods of time under various weather conditions
  • Knowledge of safety precautions and hazards involved in the assigned work 
  • Ability to use the necessary hand and power tools for work assignments 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with citizens, team, and internal/external stakeholders 
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a productive and efficient team 
  • Ability to adapt to change and modify priorities to overcome obstacles

Conditions of Employment:

  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent)
  • Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

Work Environment:

  • 40 hours per week, including evenings and weekends. Shifts up to 10-hours
