What will you do?

  • Represent the City and its employees in legal proceedings before the courts, boards, and other public forums
  • Gather facts through thorough interviews and document review
  • Research and skillfully apply the law across diverse factual situations
  • Draft clear and effective legal documents
  • Provide strategic advice and recommendations for the conduct and successful resolution of cases
  • Retain and instruct outside experts across a wide range of specialized areas
  • Negotiate and mediate the resolution of complex and adversarial matters
  • Proactively provide recommendations and strategies to avoid potential risk and liability
  • Research and maintain a comprehensive understanding of the City's structure, policy, and procedure
Qualifications

  • Completion of Bachelor of Laws LL.B, Juris Doctor J.D, or its equivalent
  • Membership with the Law Society of Alberta  or ability to attain membership with the Law Society of Alberta immediately upon appointment
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a lawyer practicing post articles in the areas of civil litigation and construction

Assets:

  • Construction litigation and builders' liens
  • Municipal, administrative, insurance and bankruptcy and insolvency law

Skills required for success:

  • Proven ability to work confidently and effectively manage time under tight constraints
  • Political acumen, strategic planning, issue resolution, and sound decision-making skills
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas to diverse audiences, build positive relationships, and establish clear expectations
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a cohesive legal and human resources team

Conditions of employment & work environment:

  • Up to: 1 permanent full-time position
  • Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday
  • Salary: $103,256.73 - $215,071.48 (Annually)
  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
  • This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
