Description
We are seeking a highly skilled Registered Occupational Hygienist or Registered Occupational Hygiene Technologist to join our health and safety team at Edmonton Police Service (EPS). You will be responsible for leading occupational hygiene surveys assessing chemical, physical, and biological stressors, and developing control strategies to ensure EPS member safety. You will achieve this by leading occupational hygiene assessments, managing complex projects, and providing technical guidance on hazardous materials. All this while performing a combination of field and office work focusing on hazardous materials and industrial hygiene monitoring. You will update, implement, and evaluate the hygiene program to ensure compliance with workplace safety standards while providing expert advice on occupational hygiene practices. Responsibilities include:
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve health and safety management systems, industrial hygiene matrices, and standards aligned with regulatory requirements and best practices.
- Design, lead, and facilitate workplace audits, safety inspections, and comprehensive risk assessments to identify hazards, evaluate risks, and recommend preventive or corrective measures using the hierarchy of controls.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret environmental and occupational hygiene data, including samples for physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic hazards, and compare results to regulatory standards.
- Evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of control measures such as PPE, ventilation, and health and safety initiatives through data analysis, performance metrics, and feedback mechanisms.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, management, operations, and health and safety committees to design, implement, and review control measures, SOPs, and compliance programs.
- Prepare, document, and report findings from audits, investigations, exposure assessments, and participate in incident investigations, ensuring corrective actions are completed.
- Recommend hazard controls via engineering solutions, updated procedures, and protective equipment; review product safety data and process designs to minimize risk
- Provide expert guidance, training, and education on safe work practices, hazard identification, and regulatory compliance; facilitate the administration of corporate programs such as WHMIS, first aid, and confined spaces.
- Participate in environmental programs, emergency response planning, and manage refusals of unsafe work per regulations.
- Administer departmental safety budgets, resource allocation, and procurement or management of safety contractors/consultants as needed.
- Guide departments in coordinating staff orientations; disseminate OH&S information and develop Safety Talk materials.
- Monitor collection and entry of safety investigation data, liaise with regulatory bodies, and keep supervisors/managers appraised of critical incidents and emerging issues.
- Uphold ethical standards and maintain current knowledge through professional registration programs.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- A University degree in Occupational Health and Safety or Occupational Hygiene plus extensive experience leading safety programs or an operations team in Occupational Health and Safety, or an equivalent combination of education, such as a diploma or certificate, training, and experience.
- Minimal 5 years experience working in the public sector operations or a unionized environment.
- Possession of or working towards a professional certification in Occupational Health and Safety or Occupational Hygiene such as ROH or ROHT. Equivalent certifications shall be considered.
- Master's degree in Occupational Hygiene would be considered an asset.
- Designation as a CRSP or CRST would be considered an asset.
- Skilled in interpreting, applying, and explaining hygiene-based legislation, best practices, and internal safety programs.
- Strong analytical and decision-making abilities for incident investigation, root cause analysis, and implementing corrective actions.
- Experienced in conducting occupational hygiene assessments and inspections using direct reading instruments (e.g., noise and light meters) across diverse workplaces.
- Proficient in monitoring, sampling, and assessing exposure to physical, biological, and chemical agents.
- Extensive regulatory knowledge with practical application of occupational health and safety policies and programs, especially in unionized environments.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of emerging trends, technologies, regulatory changes, and industry standards in occupational health and safety, adapting strategies proactively.
- Demonstrated coaching, mentoring, and performance management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including technical writing, facilitating meetings, delivering presentations, and building relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Strong management and facilitation skills for planning health and safety programs and managing safety investigations.
- Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint); familiarity with Safety Data Management Systems, Cority Software and SAP is an asset.
- Ability to manage organizational change and support staff in adapting to new processes.
- Competent in drafting and maintaining correspondence, reports, spreadsheets, presentations, and meeting minutes.
- Capable of working well under pressure, multitasking, and handling changing priorities within tight timeframes.
- Effective team collaborator with a strong client service orientation.
- Proven problem-solving and independent decision-making skills.
- Able to work with minimal supervision and demonstrate flexibility and diplomacy.
- Excellent documentation and time management skills; strong computer literacy.
- Requires local travel; may work outside regular business hours and rotate through various City operations and locations.
- Valid driver's license.
Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week.
Salary Range: 21M, Salary Grade: 054: $43.289 - $61.841 (Hourly), $2,922.00 - $4,174.30 (Bi-Weekly), $76,264.00 - $108,948.38 (Annually).
