Description

Are you passionate about sharing the gift of music and helping others find their creative voice? The City of Edmonton is looking for an enthusiastic Child / Youth Music Instructor to join our team! We are specifically looking for instructors to teach preschool music, voice, and piano. 

In this role, you will have the unique opportunity to inspire students of all ages, by sharing your technical expertise and love for music. We are seeking a mentor who can adapt to the needs of individual learners while fostering a safe and engaging environment. What will you do?

  • Teach a variety of instruments, chords, and notes to diverse age groups
  • Provide clear instruction on how to read music
  • Organize and deliver technical knowledge effectively to both children and adults
  • Answer student questions using strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Actively support the safety, well-being, and overall development of all students
  • Implement facility safety and clean-up procedures in alignment with OH&S standards
  • Collaborate and communicate regularly with coordinators and facility staff
  • Participate in seasonal in-services, mock emergency sessions, and required training
Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Proven experience teaching music to children and youth

Assets: 

  • Knowledge of reading music and proficiency in playing an instrument
  • Post-secondary education in music

Skills required for success:

  • Strong verbal communication skills to interact effectively with students and staff
  • Ability to mentor participants and foster a positive learning environment
  • Ability to assess student skill levels and adapt lesson plans accordingly
  • Independent worker with the ability to manage tasks alone
  • Strong problem-solving skills to assess and meet the needs of participants

Conditions of Employment:

  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Possession of current Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Due to the nature of this work, this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
  • Successful candidates will be required to work evenings and weekends
  • This role works primarily in an indoor setting
  • This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs, expectations and emotional states
