The City of Edmonton's Urban Planning and Economy department is seeking a passionate and dynamic Public Engagement Advisor to join the Communications and Engagement team. Urban Planning and Economy is a forward-looking department that plans, promotes and advocates change that moves this city towards the Edmonton envisioned by the citizens we serve. The department focuses on the development and economic needs of today and the future.

In this key role, you will help shape how the City connects with Edmontonians, specifically supporting a diverse portfolio of city-shaping projects. You will work closely with internal City teams and Edmontonians to ensure public engagement activities are well-planned, effectively delivered, and align with corporate guidelines.Your work will involve managing engagement events, developing materials, building relationships with community organizations, and providing advice and support on engagement best practices. What will you do?

  • Consult with the project team to create detailed public engagement processes and plans based on specific engagement needs and priorities 
  • Create strategies and action plans, and identify resource requirements and timelines for public engagement 
  • Plan and support the implementation of digital and in-person public engagement activities including the selection of approaches, tools and techniques 
  • Gather, analyze, synthesize and share public engagement feedback, leveraging online and digital tools and platforms 
  • Monitor, report and evaluate participation in and participant experience of public engagement activities 
  • Implement strategies that demonstrate an understanding of Edmontonian's concerns and mitigate issues 
  • Facilitate workshops and meetings, ensuring a respectful environment for people with lived experience or special expertise to share their views
  • Work with project teams, peers and community partners to build meaningful connections and ongoing relationships 
  • Research and implement best and innovative practices and test new engagement techniques 
  • Assist in developing new processes, tools and policies to support online engagement activities 
  • Identify and understand complex issues and how they may impact public engagement activities 
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Social Sciences, Community Development, Planning, Communications or Public Relations, or a related field
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the design and delivery of public engagement processes and strategy, including understanding of the theory, best practices and application of public engagement, and data analysis and reporting 
  • Experience as a facilitator for planning and delivering workshops or meetings
  • Demonstrated experience using inclusive approaches to leverage the value of diversity in engagement

Assets:

  • Membership in or training by the International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) or other formal training in public engagement
  • Masters in Community Engagement

Skills required for success:

  • Ability and willing attitude to work respectfully and collaboratively with others and to take initiative in a complex, high-volume environment 
  • Experience as a facilitator and in planning and delivering meetings and workshops with internal and external stakeholders 
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage strong relational and project management skills to work with internal and external stakeholders in a complex environment 
  • Experience in inclusive approaches (such as Gender Based Analysis or other) to engagement
  • Overseeing procurement and/or managing and evaluating consultant teams
  • Proficient in using and learning various software programs, including Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs is required 
  • Excellent communication skills and presentation skills

Work Environment:

  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
  • Availability to work flexible hours to attend events is required occasionally
