Reporting directly to the Legal Supervisor, Municipal Services and Enforcement, this Solicitor position offers a challenging yet rewarding role at the forefront of development and safety enforcement, playing a pivotal role in shaping a safe, orderly, and vibrant city environment for Edmontonians. You will provide crucial legal advice, shaping the city's legal landscape and contributing to the effective functioning of public services.
What will you do?
- Pioneering Legal Research: Conduct in-depth research and skillfully apply complex legal principles to a wide array of divergent factual situations, ensuring sound and robust legal positions
- Strategic Fact-Finding: Master the art of information gathering through comprehensive discussions with diverse clients and meticulous review of critical documents, forming the bedrock of your legal counsel
- Crafting Foundational Legal Instruments: Expertly draft and review essential legal instruments, including bylaws, intricate legal agreements, policy documents, and authoritative legal opinions that will directly influence city operations
- Influencing Policy through Reporting: Prepare and present compelling reports to both Council Committees and City Council, articulating complex legal matters and advocating for informed decision-making
- Proactive Risk Management: Take a leadership role in identifying potential legal risks and liabilities, proactively developing and implementing innovative recommendations to safeguard the City's interests
- Enforcement and Litigation Advocacy: Act as a key legal advisor on zoning, development compliance, and safety codes to protect community standards. Assist with or handle regulatory prosecutions and related litigation matters, including confidently appearing in court to seek orders and represent the City
- Completion of Bachelor of Laws LL.B, Juris Doctor J.D, or its equivalent
- Membership with the Law Society of Alberta, or the ability to attain membership with the Law Society of Alberta immediately upon appointment
- Minimum of 1 year of legal practice experience post-articles
- Demonstrated experience in enforcement, regulatory law, and/or prosecutions
Assets:
- Experience in municipal law, particularly planning, development, and safety codes
- Experience in criminal law
- Experience in litigation matters
Skills required for success:
- Possess high-level political acumen, strategic planning, issue resolution, diplomacy, and decision-making abilities
- Demonstrate excellent verbal, written, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, including effective teamwork
- Exhibit the ability to work independently with confidence, navigating ambiguous circumstances while managing time constraints and competing priorities
- Maintain advanced competency in computer software, including Google applications

Conditions of employment & work environment:
- Up to: 1 temporary full-time position up to 11 months
- Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday
- Salary Range: $103,256.73 - $215,071.48 (Annually)
- This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
- This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
