Description

The Infrastructure Delivery branch plays a key role in building and maintaining a great city for Edmonton's citizens. We achieve this by executing effective project and construction management to deliver high-quality public infrastructure that meets the needs of our community.

This unique dual role offers a dynamic opportunity to contribute to our city's development. As a Survey Technologist I during the construction season (approximately 6 months of the year), you will lead a field survey crew, ensuring projects are completed efficiently and accurately. In the non-construction season (approximately 6 months of the year), you will transition to the role of Survey Technical Assistant II, where you will gain hands-on experience in a wide range of field surveying tasks. This diverse experience will provide you with a well-rounded skill set and a deep understanding of the surveying field, setting you up for a rewarding career in public infrastructure.

What will you do  as a Survey Technologist I: 

Leadership and Supervisory 

  • Oversee survey crew to ensure efficient and effective completion of survey services, under the guidance of the Survey Technologist II
  • Balance business partner needs with operational requirements
  • Supervise and provide feedback to a survey crew, including input to annual performance reviews
  • Implement and enforce corporate, departmental, and safety programs and standards
  • Ensure crew activities comply with guidelines and policies
  • Provide on-the-job training and orientation to crew members
  • Support the Survey Supervisor in implementing changes and improvements

Operational 

  • Direct and assign work of the crew in order to achieve project deliverables 
  • Perform survey work in an accurate, complete and professionally acceptable manner
  • Complete and file all required technical, administrative and operational documentation
  • Ensure proper use of all assigned materials, equipment and resources 
  • Consult with Survey Technicians, Engineers, Designers, Supervisors and Client Representatives associated with survey projects 
  • Occasionally act as a flag person in traffic areas
  • Review survey progress and requirements with the immediate supervisor (Survey Technologist II) to establish staffing needs based on workload and timelines and ensuring issues are escalated to the supervisor for support 
  • Identify warnings, challenges, conflicts or cost issues in the survey service schedule in order to mitigate the impact of the risks while providing a solution to the supervisor to resolve the challenges 

Field Survey Duties 

  • Perform survey calculations and measurements to ensure accuracy 
  • Use common hand tools such as pick, axe, shovel, ice chippers, etc. in a safe manner 
  • Mark locations with information (elevation and dimensions) as per design drawings
  • Flag/paint and pound in wooden stakes as required for a survey project 
  • Hold level rods or prism poles at desired survey point locations 
  • Take measurements to determine offset or heights of instruments 
  • Plan-reading and survey computations or data reductions 
  • Take field notes for technical information 

HSE 

  • Ensure team members follow Occupational Health and Safety standards
  • Adhere to City of Edmonton Occupational Health and Safety guidelines
  • Communicate OHS updates (standards, guidelines, policies) to staff
  • Participate in safety meetings/training; report concerns
  • Complete accurate Field Level Hazard Assessment (FLHA) and document issues, concerns and coordinate resolutions as required 
  • Provide overall leadership on health and safety matters
  • Participate in OHS inspections, document issues, and coordinate resolutions
  • Attend environmental protection training
  • Contribute to investigating incidents and assign/complete follow-up actions

What will you do as a Survey Technical Assistant II: 

Operational and Field Responsibilities 

  • Support the Survey Technologist II to efficiently complete survey services
  • Safely locate survey marks using tools like axes, shovels, and picks
  • Mark locations with elevation and dimension details as per design drawings
  • Flag/paint and pound in wooden stakes
  • Clear obstacles like snow or debris for accurate data collection
  • Occasionally act as a flag person in traffic areas
  • Take measurements for instrument offset or height
  • Assist with plan reading, survey computations, and data reduction
  • Set up and operate survey equipment (levels, Total Station, GPS, etc.)
  • Take technical notes and file project notes as per guidelines

HSE 

  • Ensure to abide by any applicable City of Edmonton Occupational Health and Safety Standards and Guidelines during site visits 
  • As required, attend and participate in safety meetings and training and advise of any health and/or safety concerns 
  • Attend environmental protection training. Ensure environmental protection issues are implemented and assigned tasks are performed in an environmentally safe manner
  • Report incidents, support accident investigations, and provide recommendations for the prevention of future occurrences
