The Traffic Controls and Road Use Coordination Section manages construction and events on Edmonton's diverse network of roads. The City of Edmonton's Traffic Controls and Road Use Coordination team is looking for a Traffic Engineer to help shape and operationalize our transportation network.

The City of Edmonton's Traffic Controls and Road Use Coordination team is looking for a Traffic Engineer to help manage and operate our transportation network. This is your chance to apply your technical expertise to real-world challenges, ensuring our roads, pathways, and crossings work for everyone.

You will be responsible for evaluating and analyzing city-wide traffic operational issues for all modes of travel, including active transportation, while maintaining safety. Using national guidelines and your professional judgment, you'll make recommendations to improve safety and efficiency. This role involves supporting other City initiatives from a traffic operations perspective. You will prepare, review, and professionally authenticate critical technical documents—such as standards of practice, traffic detour plans, and accommodation plans—ensuring all work aligns with APEGA standards and national guidelines like the MUTCDC.

You will report directly to the Senior Traffic Engineer, who is responsible to review and approve the work being performed by this developmental role.

What will you do?

  • Technically evaluate traffic designs from contractors and engineering consultants to ensure they meet City requirements and safety guidelines
  • Review existing and proposed traffic control setups to ensure strict compliance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada (MUTCDC) and national standards
  • Prepare, review, and professionally authenticate technical documents and drawings, including standards of practice and temporary traffic detour plans.
  • Review and determine requests for traffic accommodation and detour plans for special events and major construction projects, providing recommendations for revisions
  • Design and implement road closure requirements and traffic mitigation strategies for emergency situations to maintain network reliability

  • Evaluate and analyze City wide traffic operational issues for all modes of travel including active modes
  • Provide expert technical engineering support to solve complex problems for Traffic Technicians and other internal City teams
  • Support the preparation and administration of the terms and conditions of contractual agreements for external engineering services
  • Represent City Operations to provide information and technical feedback to other City Branches, Departments
  • Support the preparation and administration of the terms and conditions of contractual agreements for external engineering services
  • Prepare cost estimates for the installation, operation, rental, and removal of traffic control devices
  • Conduct site inspections and field observations to inform your analysis and verify the effectiveness of traffic control measures
  • Prepare revisions to technical and legal documents such as bylaws, guidelines and procedures for review
  • Research and respond to technical inquiries from City Council, legal agencies, and the public, preparing reports and materials for Committee presentations
Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in good standing and registered with APEGA. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment
  • Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience in traffic operations, traffic safety, transportation engineering, and/or transportation planning

Assets:

  • Postgraduate engineering courses (masters or certificate) in traffic operations, traffic safety, transportation engineering, or transportation planning
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, GeoMedia, or other GIS databases
  • Experience with project management and procurement processes for consultant

Skills required for success:

  • Strong knowledge of Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) guidelines, City standards, and APEGA regulations
  • Ability to analyze complex technical information, conduct research, and make sound, timely decisions based on professional judgment, with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong negotiation and presentation abilities
  • Proven ability to manage projects, including procurement and contract administration, with a collaborative mindset and customer service focus

Conditions of employment & work environment:

  • Up to: 1 permanent full-time position
  • Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday
  • Salary: $94,870.14 - $118,585.27 (Annually)
  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
  • This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent)
  • Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • The role may necessitate the use of personal transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with the City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
