Position/PCN:  General Maintenance Mechanic II

Position FTE:  1.0

Pay Grade:  10

Starting Wage:  $21.28

Days Per Year:  260

Class Summary:  Under limited supervision performs a variety of general maintenance repairs and/or construction activities on building, grounds and equipment to ensure the continual operation of District facilities.  May repair electrical, mechanical, HVAC, boiler/heater, freezers/coolers, audio visual and copying equipment, plumbing and sewage fixtures/lines, and carpentry work.

Hours: 7am-3:30pm
 
Distinguishing Characteristics: 
 

Duty No. Essential Duties    1 Performs troubleshooting procedures to identify defective machinery and equipment.  Determines the best process for repair/replacement of defective item (s) (e.g. identifying the necessary parts, material and tools required) 2 Performs general maintenance, construction, installations and/or repair activities on buildings and grounds to ensure continual operation of District facilities and equipment. 3 Repairs HVAC systems, kitchen/refrigeration equipment, water softeners, audio visual equipment and copying machines, plumbing and sewage fixtures/lines. 4 Initiates work orders and coordinates repairs with Operations and Maintenance personnel. 5 Provides as-built drawings on modifications and new installations. 6 Coordinates work of other District personnel in general maintenance areas. 7 Assists in constructing and remodeling existing structures/projects as identified/approved by the District's capital improvement needs. 8 Prepares narrative reports concerning repairs completed/required and parts/materials used and ordered. 9 Operates District's heavy diesel and gas powered equipment to ensure continual operations of buildings and grounds.  Activities may include:  removing snow from entry-ways, exits, and sidewalks; grading gravel parking lots; transporting heavy equipment; and digging water/sewer lines. 10 Assigns and monitors on-site job activities of maintenance crews.  Provides work direction and on-the-job training functions. 11 May be required to perform additional duties which result from the Operations and Maintenance Department's workload and/or work assigned by the Maintenance Foreman and/or his/her designee.  

 
Knowledge:  Must possess working knowledge of at least one of the following:  electrical mechanical, HVAC, boiler/heater, heating/cooling, audio visual and copying equipment, plumbing and sewage fixtures/lines and construction.
 
Skills (position requirements at entry)Ability to perform the tasks listed above.  Must be able to work well with others, follow directions accurately and with speed, and read/decipher building plans and drawings.  Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication.  Prefer someone with jobsite management skills and ability to coordinate the work of others.
 
Training and Experience (position requirements at entry):   Previous education, training, work of life experience which provides evidence of the successful completion of one or more of the various tasks listed.  Such experience may be evidenced by six (6) years of general maintenance repairs and construction work. 
 
Licensing Requirements (position requirements at entry):  Valid Alaska Driver's License Required.
Class A and/or Class B CDL Preferred.
 
Physical Requirements:  Medium Work:  Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
