Looking to get your start in vehicle maintenance? At First Student, we're hiring a Technician I to join our industry-leading maintenance team. This entry-level position is perfect for someone with basic mechanical aptitude who's ready to learn, grow, and keep our fleet of school buses and vans safe and on the road.
Whether you've completed tech school, worked on vehicles at home, or are simply eager to build hands-on experience, we'll support your growth with training and development—plus potential for advancement into more senior technician roles.
$21.50/hr
What You'll DoPerform routine inspections and basic vehicle maintenance (replace lights, wipers, batteries, fluids, filters, belts, etc.)
Assist Tech II/III team members with preventative maintenance (PMs), safety inspections, and minor to moderate repairs
Help with basic brake, suspension, and drivetrain repairs under supervision
Move vehicles safely within the yard and between service areas
Maintain accurate records of work performed, supplies used, and parts ordered
Keep shop equipment and vehicles clean and organized
Respond to road calls and assist with emergency repairs as needed
Follow all FirstGroup policies, procedures, and safety standards
High school diploma or GED preferred
Vocational or technical training in vehicle repair (preferred)
0–1 years of diesel or automotive repair experience or equivalent education
Valid driver's license
CDL Class B with passenger endorsement preferred (must obtain within 3 months unless approved otherwise)
At least 1 ASE Certification within 24 months required (First Student supports ASE testing)
Basic mechanical and troubleshooting skills
Comfortable using hand tools
Basic computer skills and ability to complete electronic work orders
Strong communication and a team-first mindset
Reliable attendance and commitment to vehicle safety
Must provide your own basic hand tools
Able to lift at least 50 lbs
Work in crouched or prone positions under vehicles using a mechanic's creeper
Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in all weather
Exposure to dust, grease, and shop conditions
