Description

The Senior Manager, Space Planning role is considered an expert in in space optimization, planograms, product placement and team leadership. This role works in partnership with all levels of space planners, merchant teams, and Retail Operations among others to influence and communicate strategy of product placement across Harbor Freight locations. This role manages and leads a team of space planners and supports category leaders by providing best practices, insights and suggestions for growth, and strategic planning. This role is able to provide immediate information to make key decisions as well as develop and evolve the 1–3-year space planning roadmap.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages the creation, execution, and updates of planograms across all categories supporting all stores in line with the overall space merchandising strategy of the organization.           
  • Analyze planogram performance to ensure appropriate space allocation based on optimizing sales, capacity requirements, and space efficiency.           
  • Ensure the team contributes to and understands category strategy and develops the 1–3-year store space planning roadmap to support it.       
  • Act as the subject matter expert for merchandise space planning for peers and collaborative partners.       
  • Manage store implementation planning with critical success metrics being sales increases, hours expended, and ticket count.        
  • Train and mentor, the Merchandise Space Planners team; Build relationships with cross-functional partners to ensure company goals are met through strong collaboration.       
  • The monitoring and analyzing of space productivity to identify trends, issues, and opportunities, and provide feedback to key stakeholders in search of analytical-based recommendations and solutions. 
  • Ensure data is accurate, complete, and consistent with defined standards in multiple systems when creating and maintaining planograms.  
  • Additional duties as assigned by management.     
  • Set goals and vision for direct reports, enhancing HFT as both a “great place to work” and a “great place to shop.”   
  • Track, monitor, and coach for improvements in key metrics: transactions, sales, margin, hours, and others.

Requirements

Education and Experience

Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent preferred

Years of Experience
  • 10 years of Space Planning and merchandising within the retail industry is preferred
  • 5 years of experience leading teams or operating in a supervisor capacity

Skills
  • Leadership and mentoring skills, detail-oriented, and the ability to balance near and long-term goals.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Office Suite programs
  • Effective presentation and speaking skills, both internally and externally
  • Ability to absorb technical information and translate it into actionable results
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with both corporate and retail field associates
  • Ability to clearly and accurately communicate team and company goals with the field of 1500+ retail stores

Physical Requirements
Stores - General office environment requiring ability to:
  • Stand, walk, sit for extended periods of time.
  • Speak and listen to others in person and over the phone.
  • Use keyboard and read from computer screen and reports.
  • The ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
