We are expanding our HOK in-house Visualizations team, which specializes in high-quality photorealistic and stylized still images, animation, VR and AR experiences, and digital content creation. We view visualization as the art of telling our design stories, and we collaborate closely with our architects and designers to bring the stories to life. As a global, multidisciplinary architecture studio, we're visualizing a wide variety of project typologies all over the world. We're seeking a visualization specialist to join our team. The role is open to candidates with experience in the architectural visualization, the film industry, game design or a similar field, and requires a strong portfolio showcasing your best work. RESPONSIBILITIES: Create high-end photorealistic and stylized imagery to communicate design intent with clarity and artistic storytelling that evokes mood, atmosphere and purpose. Provide architectural storytelling through cinematography and advanced animation techniques to immerse viewers in compelling narratives that enhance clear communication and build strong emotional connection. Apply advanced material, shader, and lighting techniques to achieve high quality, photorealistic or stylized results. Translate sketches, design/schematic drawing sets and CAD-based construction documents into detailed 3D models. Develop immersive VR/AR experiences utilizing game engine technology and real-time rendering software, enhancing client engagement and design exploration. Leads VR/AR interactive presentations for clients and stakeholders, explaining design concepts and creating cinematic walkthroughs. Utilizes generative AI technologies to enhance high-end visualization pipelines, participates in development of custom workflows for efficiency and creativity. Explores cutting-edge visualization technologies and innovative techniques to push artistic and technical boundaries. Works closely with HOK Visualizations team to exchange ideas and techniques with fellow artists and advance the standards for compelling visuals. Ensures adherence to the agreed production timeline for requested visual deliverables. Assists in archiving projects in a systematic and accessible manner. On a day-to-day basis, works with designers advancing their visualizations capabilities in rendering and post-production platforms. A keen interest in physical model making is a plus, along with the ability to train and support the design staff in using the model shop. SKILLS & COMPETENCIES: Advanced knowledge of visual communication principles including narrative storytelling, look development, photographic techniques, principles of animation and in-depth understanding of composition, lighting and camera work required. A strong creative sense, technical skill, and a passion for visual communication. Able to demonstrate initiative and a proactive approach to personal development. Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work efficiently both independently and collaboratively within a team. Ability to stay focused and confident under tight deadlines and varying workloads, while prioritizing tasks and managing conflicting demands effectively. In depth knowledge of the following software is required: 3D modeling, UV mapping and texturing in 3ds Max, Blender, Adobe Substance 3D, or equivalent. Postproduction and editing of images and video in Adobe Creative Suite, or equivalent. Real-time ray tracing and GPU based rendering in V-ray, Vantage, Envision, or equivalent. Proficiency of the following software is preferred: Rhino and Grasshopper Unreal Engine 5 and Twinmotion D5 Bonus: Experience with VR/AR production. Familiarity with AI tools and platforms, with hands-on experience using generative AI systems such as ComfyUI. Midjourney. WAYS TO STAND OUT: Familiarity with open standards (e.g. Universal Scene Description (USD), MaterialX and OpenPBR). Experience with motion capture and procedural animation. The reasonably estimated annual salary range for this position in Washington D.C. is $55,000 - $70,000. #
