Class Summary:
Under limited supervision, the Systems Engineer serves as the district's senior technical resource for server infrastructure and cloud architecture. This position leads the design, integration, and long-term strategy of the district's hybrid IT environment, including on-premises and Microsoft cloud-based systems (Azure, Entra ID, Intune, Azure Stack, and related services). The Systems Engineer provides day-to-day oversight, mentoring, and coordination for Systems Administrators, while managing enterprise-level solutions for identity, backup/disaster recovery, virtualization, and emerging technologies

Band/Grade 1 Oversees and provides technical leadership and direction for Systems Administrators, ensuring tasks are delivered timely and aligned with operational priorities and industry best practices. 2 Leads the design, planning, coordination, and implementation of hybrid infrastructure solutions with all stake holders and groups. integrating on-prem Active Directory with Azure AD/Entra, Microsoft Intune, and cloud-first platforms. Manages and/or creates documentation for systems in their area for District staff and other IT groups. 3 Manages and oversees enterprise-level systems, including virtualization (Hyper-V/VMware), storage, backups, disaster recovery, and security frameworks. 4 Assists with evaluation, recommendation and implementation of hardware and software for LAN/WAN use. 5 Assists with management of projects from the initial preparation and planning of the project to the procurement and installation of equipment and/or services. 6 Evaluates and pilots emerging technologies (e.g., PaaS, Azure Stack, advanced security tools) to keep the district's IT environment modern, secure, and efficient. 7 Designs, plans, integrates, tests, implements, documents and enhances the physical and logical components of a large complex system. This may involve the
analysis and evaluation of systems software and software. 8 Performs daily monitoring and maintenance of systems 9 Performs deployment and maintenance of virtual computing environments 10 Manages and maintains core Hypervisor solution, Windows Servers, server services including, but not limited to Active Directory, Microsoft Entra, Google Workspace, Group Policy Management and E-Mail Servers. 11 Mentors, coaches, and trains Systems Administrators and other technical staff, fostering professional growth and knowledge sharing. 12 Other duties as assigned Knowledge: Previous education training, work or life experience which provides reasonable evidence of successful performance of various tasks listed. Such experience may be evidenced by two to three years of progressively responsible experience in local area network analysis, design, installation, and support, three to five years of advanced technical support of microcomputer hardware, software and operations systems. Minimum 5 (five) years experience administering enterprise-level: Expertise in hybrid Active Directory design and integration with Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD). Deep knowledge of Windows Server, virtualization platforms (Hyper-V/VMware), and storage/network architecture. Strong understanding of cloud-first technologies (Azure, Intune, Azure Stack, Microsoft 365) and PaaS implementations. Experience with enterprise backup and disaster recovery planning and cloud-based recovery solutions. Familiarity with cybersecurity frameworks, compliance standards, and best practices in a K–12 environment. Proven history of effectively managing large projects. Experience with evaluating, selecting, and implementing new hardware/software. A bachelor's degree in related field, or course work toward that degree, is desirable.

Training and Experience (position requirements at entry): Experience in concepts of the following: modern network architecture, network and server security, Storage-Area Network and computer virtualization. Experience with implementing, configuring and maintaining Windows Servers, Active Directory, Hypervisors, and enterprise cloud environments such as Microsoft Azure and Google GSuite Workspace. Work toward and or the following certifications (or similar equivalents) are preferred: Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate, Microsoft Certified: Identity and Access Administrator (SC-300), VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or equivalent, CompTIA Security+ or CISSP (or equivalent cybersecurity certification), ITIL v4 Intermediate or Managing Professional (for process and service management)
Licensing Requirements (position requirements at entry): Must have a valid Alaskan Driver's License.
Physical Requirements: Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
