Technical Director of Building Sciences – National Search

Intertek's Building Science Solutions (BSS) group is primarily focused on Acoustical Testing, Consulting and Noise Assessments; building enclosure consulting, commissioning, and field performance testing for new construction and retrofit projects; Forensic Services and Investigations; Insurance Services; Due Diligence Services, Property Resilience Assessments; Sustainability Consulting and Energy Services; and Whole Building Air Barrier Assurance, Consulting, and Testing services.

What are we looking for?

As the Technical Director, the primary responsibility is to ensure Intertek's BSS is a visible leader in the Building Enclosure/Building Science industry.  This will include developing and managing staff training and mentoring programs (for all levels), technical standardization, industry association involvement and leadership, preparing technical publications, attending industry events, etc., as well as working with our subject matter experts in technical discipline development. 

What you will do:

  • Build, expand, and manage a national level training program for the Building Science Solutions group, primarily focused on Building Enclosure Consulting.  Ensure our staff is properly trained and supported in technical matters and processes. Overall training should encompass training entry-level, mid-level, and highly experienced consultants, in a range of topics including technical information and consulting processes, as well as managerial and leadership topics.
  • Perform virtual and regional in-person training sessions for staff.  Program will include group-wide knowledge sharing sessions, and smaller group-focused seminars.
  • Lead and collaborate with technical discipline subject matter experts to develop training sessions, SOPs, as well as standardization for work product and processes.
  • Collaborate with Building Science Solutions operating unit managers to determine site-specific training needs.
  • Participate in the BSS senior leadership team meetings.
  • Participate in national-level building enclosure industry associations and obtain board positions.
  • Present technical content at national-level association symposiums, and on Intertek social media platforms.
  • Work with BSS staff to prepare and publish technical articles and/or create and present technical presentations at various events.
  • Lead the development and yearly updates of internal technical resources including libraries, internal and external resources.
  • Manage training and compliance records for the Building Science Solutions business.
  • Identify internal skills gaps within the Building Science Solutions practice and opportunities for innovation within the industry.
  • Collaborate with staff on project-specific technical items.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications:

  • 20+ years' experience primarily focused on building enclosure consulting.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer or Registered Architect.
  • BS in engineering/architecture, or other related degree. 
  • Extensive technical knowledge of all aspects of the building enclosure, including waterproofing, air barrier, insulation, cladding, fenestration, and roofing systems, as well as moisture problems from air leakage and/or vapor migration.
  • Significant experience with new building consulting/commissioning, existing building assessments and investigations, and forensic evaluations.
  • Deep understanding of building enclosure testing standards and methods.
  • Experience with thermal modeling and hygrothermal analysis for building enclosure systems.
  • Experience with financial management of operating units (i.e. profit and loss responsibility).
  • Project management experience for a full range and types of projects.
  • Experience with preparing scope and fee proposals for potential projects.
  • Good standing and active participant in industry associations.
  • Experience presenting technical topics to industry associations, trades and consulting firms.
  • Published author of white papers or articles in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to meet changing and strict deadlines.
  • Experience with managing staff, both technical and administrative.
  • Ability to travel 25 to 50% of the time.
  • Sound computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, and AutoCAD)
  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record
