Job Summary:
Under direct supervision of registered nurse or provider, performs variety of technical, semi-technical, clerical and patient attending duties; participates in instruction of patients and family members; works cooperatively with staff and other departments. In addition, assists nursing supervisor in orienting, training, coaching, mentoring, and evaluating emergency department tech staff; works with nursing supervisor and appropriate staff to implement training and monitoring measurements; participates in committees and/or department processes to design, plan, coordinate and implement improvements.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Establishes and maintains open communication; relays pertinent information to staff members in own department or other departments; assures information is accurate and complete.
- Reports and records vital signs, tests, procedures and pertinent data and observations related to patient care duties within scope of practice.
- Provides written instructions and/or educational materials to patients and family members; reinforces written materials provided by privileged practitioner or registered nurse.
- Transports patients, equipment and supplies from one location to another; assists with lifting as needed.
- Performs chest compressions in cardiac arrests.
- Maintains clean, safe and well equipped environment for patients and staff.
- Utilizes universal precautions during patient care and related activities; maintains awareness of infection control and emergency preparedness procedures.
- Participates in economical utilization of supplies; assures that emergency equipment and supply inventories are maintained and available for use.
- Works with nursing supervisor and appropriate staff to implement training and monitoring measurements; assists in orienting, training, coaching and mentoring of emergency department tech staff; assists nursing supervisor in monitoring and evaluating tech staff performance.
- Participates in committees and/or department processes to design, plan, coordinate and implement improvements; identifies and resolves issues related to department processes; recommends improvement ideas and suggestions; collaborates with others to implement department processes.
- Assembles decontamination equipment and participates in disaster procedures as assigned by incident commander.
Basic Qualifications: Experience
- Minimum one (1) year emergency services experience or related background and experience.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of course in basic cardiology or EKG.
- Completion of training as Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B), Army Medical Specialist, Navy Corpsman, or nursing student who has completed one or more semesters of an accredited registered nursing program with clinical coursework and practicum.
- Completion of basic pharmacology course and training as Mobile Intensive Care Technician (MICT or EMT-P), Army Medical Specialist, Navy Corpsman or nursing student who has completed one or more semesters of an accredited registered nursing program with clinical coursework and practicum.
- Completion of training in one or more of the following: Intermediate or Advanced EKG, 12 Lead EKG, and Drugs and Electrolytes.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Hospital Aide maybe in lieu of education requirement.
- CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers OR Basic Life Support
- Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in customer service, interpersonal relations, oral communication, teamwork, and written communication.
- Completion of one or more of the following Emergency Nurses Association sponsored courses: Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) and Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (NPC).
- Completion of one or more of the following American Heart Association courses: Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
