Job Summary

Responsible to perform a variety of grounds keeping and custodial functions at assigned location(s) in support of school facilities and grounds.  Performs a variety of general repair and maintenance work on school facilities and equipment.. Picks up and/or delivers school/office supplies and materials, assembles/disassembles and moves furniture and equipment as necessary.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Responsible for maintenance of grounds and equipment at assigned location(s) to include mowing the lawn, trimming, weeding, and pruning shrubbery, hedges, trees and other foliage.  Sprays lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer or pesticide.  Rakes, bags and takes daily trash (which includes heavy grass, weeds, shrubs, and branches) to designated disposal areas on a regular basis. Plants and waters lawn, flowers, trees, shrubs and other foliage to enhance landscape. Assist faculty and students with preparing boxes/beds for class gardens.  May demonstrate simple gardening techniques to small groups of students and participate in gardening projects as requested.  May also include pick-up and delivery of sand and upkeep of sandboxes.
  • Performs a variety of custodial functions to include vacuuming, sweeping, dusting, mopping, stripping / refinishing floors and polishing floors; cleaning walls, ceilings, desk, chairs, windows, countertops and ceiling fans. Pressure wash all concrete walk paths to ensure safe conditions. Cleans and disinfects wash basins, toilets, urinals, and showers (as applicable) using disinfectants, solvents and acids.  Refills bathroom dispensers when required.
  • Performs general building and fixture repairs such as repairing/replacing screens, installing non-skid strips; performs general carpentry repairs such as fixing doors, windows and latches, installing/changing locks; performs simple plumbing repairs such as replacing appliances, replacing fixtures, replacing washers and floats, unclogging drains, etc; performs general painting work such as painting/repaints doors, ceilings, children's toys, walls, touching up furnishing etc.
  • Delivers school/office supplies and materials.  Assembles and/or disassembles furniture, toys, playground structure and equipment to various locations as necessary.
  • Maintains and repairs equipment and tools which includes cleaning, lubricating and replacing defective parts.  Responsible to maintain assigned KS vehicle and ensuring scheduled service maintenance (safety checks and repairs) as needed.
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the requirements listed.

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1 year related work experience.
  • Valid driver ‘s license.

  • Ability to plan own work (including estimating time and materials needed); ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Basic knowledge of tools and equipment used in custodial, grounds keeping and facilities maintenance work.  Knowledge of proper use, safety rules and regulations when operating or using tools and equipment in custodial, grounds keeping and facilities maintenance work.  Working knowledge of building maintenance practices, tools and materials.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and simple sketches; lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Knowledge of safe and effective methods for the application of fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides.

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office/school environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.
