Kamehameha Schools Kapālama is looking for a full-time Head Strength & Conditioning Coach!

This role involves working closely with the Director of Strength & Conditioning to lead and maintain the program, collaborate with over 20 sports teams in their training programs, and oversee daily operations.

Strong communication skills, flexibility in training style, and the ability to lead with empathy are essential for success in this role. The ideal candidate will be passionate about working with K-12 student athletes, familiar with the long-term/youth development model, and committed to youth development. Management experience is a plus. Our targeted salary range is $83k - $93k, depending on experience.

Job Summary

This position will report directly to the Director of Strength and Conditioning ("Director"). The Head Strength and Conditioning Coach will work seamlessly with the Director to integrate a strength and conditioning program for all assigned sports K-12, with the three major goals of improving athletic performance, reducing athletic injuries, and teaching lifelong fitness and movement skills. Supporting the mission and core values of the department and Kamehameha Schools, this position will facilitate the day-to-day operations of all the strength and conditioning facilities. This includes supervising training sessions, maintaining facility operations, evaluating athletes, maintaining athlete records, and teaching strength and conditioning classes as needed. The Head Strength and Conditioning Coach will meet regularly with sport coaches to determine what the athletes need to work on. If working with an injured athlete engaged in rehabilitation, the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach will consult with the sports medicine or athletic training staff. The Head Strength and Conditioning Coach is responsible for maintaining the strength and conditioning facilities, and for implementing policies, plans, and procedures for the safe and professional operation of the facility. May perform other duties as assigned by the Director.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Strength and Conditioning to design and implement strength training and conditioning programs in-season, off-season, and pre-season for all school-sanctioned male and female athletic programs in a manner that reflects research-driven practices and our country's Long-Term Athletic/Fitness Development Model.
  • Manage the daily integration of the departments training philosophy throughout the assigned sports k-12 and strength and conditioning physical education classes.
  • Teach strength and conditioning physical education classes, as well as train athletic teams, fostering students' physical knowledge and skills.
  • Manage and mentor part-time staff and interns in strength and conditioning department.
  • Manage the implementation of the departments system for tracking athlete attendance and athlete progress in conjunction with the sport coaches.
  • Manage the integration of the departments testing and evaluation system of all student-athletes and maintains appropriate records.
  • Assist the Director of Strength and Conditioning with the continuing education of all strength and conditioning staff and student-athletes.
  • Work in cooperation with the sports medicine or athletic training staff in the rehabilitation and strengthening of injured athletes.
  • Responsible for maintenance of all equipment and enforcement of all rules and regulations.
  • Remain current in the field of strength and conditioning by continually reviewing all appropriate literature and attending conferences and seminars as time and budget permits.
  • Facilitate a collaborative relationship among sport coaches, sports medicine, and the strength and conditioning staff.
  • Assist the Director of Strength and Conditioning to conduct an annual needs-analysis for each sport team in conjunction with the sport coach and the team's athletic trainer at the conclusion of each sport season.
  • Manage the daily expectations for athlete conduct that mirror the school's expectations for curricula and extra-curricular activities, as stated in the school's Student Code of Conduct.
  • Promote the physical and mental well-being of all program participants.
  • Perform special duties as assigned by the Director of Strength and Conditioning.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience in athletic or school-related activity administration. This includes, but is not limited to, experience in coaching, advising, and inventory management within such environment.
  • A current relevant professional certification credentialed by an independent accreditation agency—for example, the NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist® (CSCS®) certification.
  • Experience managing, mentoring, and directing a large staff of regular and temporary staff.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to relate effectively with a variety of individuals to include students, coaches, other KS staff, physicians, parents, teachers, administrators, media personnel, alumni, etc. Skilled in conflict resolution.
  • Knowledge of National Federal High School Sports Rules, MIL Policies and Procedures and HHSAA Policies and Procedures.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to include evenings and weekends on a regular basis as well as off-island travel.
  • Working knowledge of budget development and administration

Preferred Qualification

  • Master's Degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Science, or related field.
  • Previous experience working with middle or high school aged students, preferably in a fitness or PE environment.
  • Sensitivity to Hawaiian culture and Christian values.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasionally write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh at least 50 pounds.
  • Often walk, stand, twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office/school environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.
