Job Summary
The Coordinator, Student Support Services provides support and leadership to interdisciplinary teams focused on developing and implementing a K-12 approach to support student success in school by addressing their academic, social, and emotional learning. Serves as a lead in providing educational services to students with learning needs through observation, screening, identification, and/or monitoring of students with a variety of learning challenges. Ensures proper documentation in KS' system of record and performs regular audits of data in the system. Promotes a professional learning environment for staff and faculty that assures continual improvements in student learning; positively supports and effects change, assuring results are achieved as the campus moves forward with MTSS; and integrates innovative educational research and pedagogy into the campus's educational program; is a role model of Hawaiian values and a champion of Hawaiian culture and language. This position requires strong interpersonal skills in order to relate effectively with students, parents, teachers, staff, campus leadership, and Malama Ola.
Essential Functions
Leadership
- Helps support and lead the centralized efforts of an interdisciplinary team created to support student success in school
- Monitors operations of this team including coordination, implementation, and supervision of student services to insure a nurturing and productive school environment
- Coaches, nurtures, and assesses work performance of, and provides constructive feedback, recognition and development opportunities to team members
- In collaboration with other administrators, helps to address and resolve problems and/or issues involving students, teachers, parents, and staff
- Develops a sense of inclusion and common purpose among counseling staff, and fosters their mutual support
- Ensures the provision of a safe environment for staff and students in line with KS policies and procedures.
- Assists the KS vision of facilitating a welcoming, safe and comfortable environment and a challenging school program. Develops a sense of `ohana among students and staff, marked by mutual care and respect, friendliness, happiness, and belonging
- Takes active involvement in the general life of the campus, and supports it formally and informally within and beyond the school program.
- Attends and participates in K-12, team, department, and general staff meetings
Program Development and Administration
- Observes, screens, identifies, and monitors students with a variety of learning/academic challenges
- Administers screening instruments that assess students who may have learning disabilities
- Assists behavioral health specialists and school counselors with coordinating off-campus referrals for students needing educational assessments/evaluations
- Advises, consults, and collaborates with administrators, counselors, and teachers regarding students' intervention plans and appropriate actions needed to address students' special needs
- Assists teachers toward implementing instructional strategies in the classroom. Provides instructional intervention and learning strategies
- Develops meaningful goals for student attainment and monitoring of progress toward these goals
- Prescribes strategies based upon screening results or educational assessment and evaluation reports that help students' academic success
- Implements strategies with administrators and teachers and monitors progress.
- Offers teacher training and/or workshops related to diverse learning styles and strategies
- Develops resources in the community to facilitate services for students with special needs – assistive technology, referral to psychologists/psychiatrists, schools, tutors, etc.
- Seeks out continual professional development opportunities to ensure that the student support program is up to date on current trends across a range of educational, social, and emotional issues and topics
Data Assessment and Reporting
- Collects and analyzes student data and guides its effective use. Based on data analysis, works collaboratively with school and campus administrators to develop strategies to support student success for all students in grades K-12
- Maintains database/tracking system of students identified or suspected of learning disabilities
- Ensures proper documentation in KS' system of record by Student Support Team members and performs regular audits of data in the system.
Position Requirements
Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.
- Master's degree in Education, Special Education, Counseling, or closely related field
- Minimum 7 years of related work experience in a K-12 school setting.
- Minimum 2 years of supervisory and/or leadership experience.
- Mastery of problem-solving skills which facilitate innovation.
- Demonstrated ability to remain flexible in demanding work situations and to adapt to a rapidly changing environment
- Ability to work with extremely confidential and sensitive information and understand privacy issues; work independently; deal with high level contacts internal and external to KS
- Outstanding personal integrity and ability to manage responsibilities in a manner beyond reproach.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple functions and priorities in an efficient manner and to meet deadlines and targets on time
- Excellent in communication skills (oral, verbal and written) to all levels of management, faculty, staff, external agencies, alumni, students, parents, and other school staff and community resource representatives.
- Experience both supervising and collaborating with groups of education stakeholders.
- Prior experience working in a large, complex, accountability based K-12 environment.
- Skills in program and project planning and management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with leading a diverse community of learners in the context of Hawaiian-cultural/indigenous based education
- Knowledge of Hawaiian culture, history, and/or language.
- Understanding of adolescent development theories and the ability to translate that knowledge into effective programs
- Proven track record of building rapport with students, staff, and parents and to develop sensitivity when confronting issues with various groups
- Excellent planning, organization, and facilitation skills to leverage the highest return during meetings/workshops with a wide range of audiences
- Experience within K-12 school settings and a demonstrated ability to facilitate innovative 21st century learning environments
- Familiarity and evidence of successful implementation of diverse teaching strategies (e.g. differentiated instruction, holistic learning, and strategic learning such as memory techniques, chunking, etc.)
- Ability to collaborate with teachers and administrators to build seamless transitions for students to achieve success in their academic experiences
- A proven track record and diverse experience working with students in Special Education
- Experience in the assessment of individual's cognitive abilities and academic achievement
- A working knowledge of the American's with Disabilities Act (ADA) and designing educational interventions to support student needs
- Ability to successfully and effectively administer various screening instruments with students having learning challenges
- Ability to successfully and effectively interpret a variety of diagnostic tests such as WISC, WIAT, Wechsler, Woodcock-Johnson Batteries, and specific tests of language, written expression, etc. as noted in educational assessment reports
- Working knowledge of community resources to assist students with social, emotional, and special needs
- Knowledge and familiarity of KS internal policies, procedures, Strategic Vision/Plan, Tactical Plan, vision, mission, and goals.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
- Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
- Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.
Working Conditions
- This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
- Work is conducted in an office/school environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
- Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours may be required to meet goals and objectives.
