The Senior Director, PeriOp Nursing Services holds 24-hour accountability for the quality of patient care, efficiency of clinical and departmental business operations, and personnel management oversight for USC Keck Hospital ORs and Preop/Post Op Units. Focusing on quality, service, and efficiency, the Senior Director develops and implements an innovative program resulting in exceptional patient outcomes, patient and family, physician, and staff satisfaction program growth, and fiscal responsibility. The Senior Director will also partner with Executive/leadership team in meeting and accomplishing the strategic plan and upholding the values of the organization.

Essential Duties:

  • Clinical Operations • Designs and oversees efficient operation systems throughout USC Keck Hospital ORs and Preop/Post Op Units for managing patient throughput; defines and implements metrics for managing process improvement. • Understands, articulates, and ensures compliance with professional standards, state, federal, and local regulatory agencies requirements, and policies of the Hospital. • Leads and establishes change agents during patient flow/workflow redesigns; determines when new delivery models are appropriate; envisions, develops, and directs systems. • Utilizes research findings and best practices for the establishment of standards, practices, and patient care models. • Ensures all staff and staff leaders are clinically competent and trained on their role in patient safety. • Targets outcomes that are evidenced based; utilizes comparative benchmarking data. • Identifies problem prone processes; measures success of improving specific areas of patient care; analyzing root causes and variations from quality standards; improves processes; sustains success. • Ensures staff is educated in risk management and compliance issues; develops systems to encourage prompt reporting of potential liability; envisions and takes action to reduce/eliminate risk. • Utilizes data analysis/synthesis, quality improvement methodologies, regulatory and legislative reports to assess and improve quality of care and service.
  • Business Operations • Engages with physicians, other colleagues, and subject experts in surgery management to identify best practices and incorporate them into the USC model as applicable. • Understands business drivers of physician practice and provides high quality business environment in the USC perioperative services. • Educates patient care teams on financial implications of patient care decisions. • Measures analyses, and manages financial performance and business processes. • Utilizes hospital databases and decision support programs for planning processes and systems. • In partnership with the Business Director of Perioperative Services and in collaboration with the medial staff, develops priorities for capital expenditures. • In partnership with the Business Director of Perioperative Services establishes the operating budgets for assigned departments and monitor performance against budgets.
  • Leadership • Role models the perspective patient care is the core of the USC perioperative work. • Promotes systems thinking as a value in the organization; considers nursing decisions impact on the organization as a whole. • Selects, trains/orients, assigns department staff, evaluates performance, and makes recommendations for personnel actions. • Integrates high ethical standards and core values into everyday work activities. • Creates an environment in which others are setting expectations and hold each other accountable. • In partnership with the Medical Directors collaborates and facilitates and optimizes efficiency, access and throughput.
  • Communication and Relationship Building • Builds trust and collaborative relationships with staff, peers, physicians, other disciplines and ancillary services. • Accomplishes objectives through persuasion, celebrates success and accomplishments, and communicates a shared vision. • Creates an environment which recognizes and values differences in staff, patients and families, physicians and the community. • Builds credibility with physicians as a champion for patient care, quality, efficiency and nursing professionalism. • Collaborates with physicians to develop patient care protocols, policies, and procedures and to determine patient care and facility needs. • Incorporates nursing research into clinical practices.

Required Qualifications:

  • Req Bachelor's Degree Nursing Degree in Nursing required
  • Req Master's degree in Nursing or related field Master's Degree in Nursing may be in lieu-of Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Req 6 years Minimum of perioperative nursing experience.
  • Req 3 years Experience as an OR Manager or equivalent clinical leadership role within nursing and/or hospital services administration.
  • Req Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
  • Req Committed to excellence in patient care and customer service.
  • Req Organization/time management skills.
  • Req Ability to lead change while achieving business goals and objectives.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pref Certified Perioperative Registered Nurse - CNOR (AORN) Strongly preferred

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Registered Nurse - RN (CA Board of Registered Nursing) Valid California License.
  • Req Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

The annual base salary range for this position is $191,360.00 - $315,744.00.
