Group Director – Analytical Chemistry
Location: Lafayette, IN
Open to relocation candidates within the Midwest (relocation assistance offered)

Salary: $150,000–$165,000 per year (base)
The Group Director – Analytical Chemistry provides both technical and managerial leadership for solid-state analytical chemistry services supporting the development of small-molecule compounds across pharmaceutical, specialty chemical, agricultural, and related industries. This role oversees solid-state characterization, method development, validation, and routine testing, while managing laboratory personnel and instrumentation to support development, patent prosecution, and litigation activities.
Key Responsibilities-
Lead the Analytical Chemistry function, including API, intermediate, and finished product characterization using solid-state analytical techniques.

Oversee method development, validation, reproduction of prior art, and routine analytical testing.

Manage laboratory resources (staffing, instrumentation, workload) to maintain productivity and quality standards.

Provide people leadership, including hiring, performance management, goal setting, training, and professional development.

Serve as a technical expert in spectroscopic and solid-state techniques, including Raman, IR, NMR, XRPD, particle size analysis, thermal analysis, microscopy, and chromatography.

Ensure strong SOP adherence and laboratory compliance, maintaining high standards of data integrity and documentation.

Analyze complex analytical data and interpret results for internal and external stakeholders.

Author and review technical reports, summaries, and white papers for clients and legal purposes.

Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in analytical service delivery, workflows, and processes.

Proactively address technical or operational challenges to ensure timely, efficient, and cost-effective project execution.

Support broader business and strategic objectives through high-quality scientific leadership and client engagement.

PhD in Organic, Analytical, or Physical Chemistry preferred10+ years of relevant industry experience will be considered.

Prior experience in the pharmaceutical or chemical services industry is required.

5+ years of experience in a contract research laboratory, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role overseeing diverse analytical techniques and instrumentation.

Expert knowledge of analytical chemistry applied to pharmaceutical development and preclinical testing.

Strong understanding of laboratory instrumentation operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting (manual and automated systems).

Proficiency with computerized data systems and LIMS.

Demonstrated ability to manage complex workflows, prioritize competing demands, and deliver high-quality analytical results.

Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

Proven ability to independently identify, recommend, and implement business and process improvements.

High level of self-motivation, accountability, and productivity.
