Job Description: Laboratory Operations Specialist 1
Pay Rate: $23-27/hr
Location: South San Francisco, CA
The Laboratory Operations Specialist will work both independently and with other members of the Lab Operations Team to develop processes that provide member companies with the services, supplies, and equipment they need to accomplish their research. The position will also include tracking and partially managing the current processes while suggesting process improvements. The Laboratory Operations Specialist will support multiple facilities and customers in the San Francisco Bay Area, interact with a diverse group of member staff, and flourish in a fast-paced and demanding research environment.
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Facility and equipment maintenance, and ‘day-to-day' procedures, following internal procedures and direct instruction, which can include:
- Make common lab solutions such as 70% IPA
- Autoclave dishes and media as a service for members
- Keep common instrument areas clean and orderly
- Maintain biosafety cabinets and incubators, including regular sterilizations
- Remove medical/biohazardous waste from laboratories and transfer to onsite accumulation area
- Inspect and label safety shower/eyewash stations and fire extinguishers
- Refill safety glass dispensers
- Monitor levels of common-use dry ice and liquid nitrogen; refill as necessary
- Receive packages from external carriers and deliver to internal recipients
- Enter newly received chemicals into chemical inventory
- Defrost freezers and perform cold storage inspections
- Spill kit, fire extinguisher, and eyewash inspections
- Miscellaneous cleaning tasks as needed
- Proactively interact with member scientists to identify and resolve issues with services, equipment, and supplies. Use an electronic ticket system to record issues and report progress to requestors.
- Coordinate with BVL team and outside vendors for lab support (equipment, services, facilities, etc.).
- Contribute to creating, updating, and following SOPs associated with BVL site operations.
- Suggest ideas and bring solutions for site improvements and increase efficiency.
- Assist with any changes or cleaning necessary for the site to maintain an appealing atmosphere.
- Help improve existing policies and procedures that act as a template for current and future BVL sites.
- Proactively interact with BVL member companies to identify and resolve issues with services, equipment, and supplies.
- Flexible, versatile, and adaptable to assist new members/customers and continuous improvement projects.
- Requires traveling between sites.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
- Bachelor's or AA/AS degree in life sciences or related field.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in a laboratory setting.
- Able to work in a flexible and fast-paced environment that is constantly changing.
- Certifications: None required, but EH&S, HazMat, and bloodborne pathogen training is highly desirable.
- Travel: Must be able to travel between sites 50% of the time.
- Licenses: Driver's license required as travel will be needed between sites.
- Physical Abilities: Able to lift 50 lbs., work requires walking, standing, bending, reaching, lifting or carrying objects that typically weigh less than 10 lbs.
