Director of Veterinary Services /Veterinarian (Laboratory Animal Medicine) Role Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated Director of Veterinary Services/Veterinarian to lead and oversee the company's veterinary and laboratory animal medicine program supporting preclinical research utilizing gene-edited minipig disease models.
This position is ideal for a veterinarian with experience in laboratory animal medicine, preclinical research, and regulatory oversight, and is particularly well suited for candidates who are residency trained or board-eligible/board-certified through the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DACLAM/ACLAM).
The Director of Veterinary Services will serve as the Attending Veterinarian, providing leadership in animal welfare, regulatory compliance, and veterinary medical oversight while supporting innovative translational research programs. This role also functions as a scientific partner to internal research teams and external clients, contributing veterinary expertise to study design, model development, and execution of preclinical studies.
The position offers significant autonomy and leadership influence, with opportunity to expand into broader executive leadership responsibilities as the organization grows.
Key Responsibilities Veterinary Leadership & Laboratory Animal Medicine- Serve as the Attending Veterinarian, providing oversight of all veterinary care and animal welfare programs.
- Lead the institution's Laboratory Animal Medicine program, ensuring the highest standards of veterinary care and humane animal use.
- Oversee veterinary care and colony health management for gene-edited minipig disease models.
- Develop and implement veterinary SOPs, clinical programs, and preventative health strategies.
- Provide clinical care, medical oversight, and consultation for research animals.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and accreditation standards including USDA, OLAW, FDA, and AAALAC International.
- Serve as a key member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), providing veterinary guidance on protocol development, review, and program oversight.
- Provide veterinary and scientific expertise to support preclinical research studies utilizing large animal disease models.
- Collaborate with internal research teams and external clients on study design, model selection, endpoints, and experimental feasibility.
- Participate in client meetings to communicate the capabilities, limitations, and translational relevance of minipig models.
- Assist project managers with study planning, logistics, timelines, and cost estimates.
- Support development and characterization of new disease models through internal research initiatives.
- Prepare and review study reports, technical summaries, and scientific documentation for research clients.
Perform and/or oversee advanced veterinary and research procedures including:
- Placement and management of indwelling vascular catheters
- Muscle biopsies
- Cardiac and abdominal ultrasound/echocardiography
- Surgical and laparoscopic embryo transfer
Additional responsibilities include:
- Training and mentoring animal care and technical staff in veterinary procedures and best practices.
- Evaluating staff competency and supporting technical skill development.
- Coordinating with external veterinary specialists or consultants when needed.
- Maintaining proficiency in emerging techniques relevant to evolving preclinical studies.
- Maintain an AAALAC-accreditation-ready laboratory animal program.
- Ensure full regulatory compliance with federal, state, and institutional requirements governing animal research.
- Support regulatory inspections, audits, and accreditation activities.
- Provide strategic input into facility planning, colony management, and research expansion initiatives.
- Contribute to long-term planning for veterinary program growth and research capabilities.
- DVM or equivalent veterinary degree required.
- Licensed or eligible for veterinary licensure in the United States.
- 2–5+ years of experience in laboratory animal medicine, preclinical research, or CRO environments.
- Recent, hands-on experience performing procedures.
- Experience serving as a research veterinarian preferred.
- Experience working with swine or minipig models strongly preferredDemonstrated hands-on technical and procedural proficiency in research animal medicine.
- Strong understanding of animal research regulations and compliance frameworks.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact with scientists, research staff, and external clients.
- Base salary: $150,000 – $175,000 (commensurate with experience)
