Applied Materials Engineer – Chemistry (Entry-Level)- Troy Michigan
This entry-level/early career role supports materials engineering activities by applying foundational knowledge of chemistry and industrial processes to meet customer, manufacturing, and quality requirements.
The position works closely with engineering and manufacturing teams to evaluate and characterize non-metallic materials used in heavy-duty and military axle applications. Materials include paints and coatings, elastomers, plastics, adhesives, sealants, oils, greases, gaskets, and friction materials. Responsibilities
- Support coating and chemistry specialists with laboratory testing and equipment operation. Assist with material evaluations and qualification activities
- Receive, document, label, and track material samples
- Perform corrosion and environmental testing and analyze results
- Follow and apply ASTM, ISO, and other relevant test standards
- Conduct routine laboratory equipment checks, calibrations, and verifications
- Help troubleshoot testing or material issues and support corrective actions
- Dispose of tested materials in accordance with procedures
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe laboratory environments
- Follow all safety, quality, and ethical standards
- Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
- Communicate test results clearly to internal stakeholders
- Demonstrate reliability, accountability, and a willingness to learn
- Hands-on experience with laboratory or materials testing
- Familiarity with corrosion or environmental testing
- Exposure to non-metallic materials such as coatings, plastics, elastomers, or adhesives
- Experience with lab instrumentation such as:
- Corrosion or salt spray chambers
- TGA, DSC, DMA
- FTIR, ICP-OES, or XRF
- Mechanical testing equipment (e.g., Instron)
- Experience supporting audits or quality activities
- Assignment Length: Approximately 2 years
- Schedule: Full-time, day shift (approximately 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM)
- Work Location: 100% On-site, Troy, MI
