Special Education Paraprofessional (Middle School)
Pediatric Therapeutic Services is looking to partner with Special Education Paraprofessionals in Newville, PA as independent contractors to support middle school students with disabilities. This position works closely with students to promote academic growth, independence, communication, and social-emotional development.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Support middle school students with disabilities in individual, small-group, and inclusive classroom settings
- Assist special education teachers with implementing IEP goals, accommodations, and modifications
- Reinforce instruction through guided practice and direct student support
- Provide behavioral support using positive behavior intervention strategies
- Assist students with personal care needs, including toileting, hygiene, feeding, and mobility
- Physically assist students with transfers in and out of wheelchairs, positioning, and safe mobility
- Support nonverbal and minimally verbal students by assisting with AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices and communication systems
- Monitor and document student progress, behavior, and communication attempts
- Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment
- Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, and other school activities
- Prepare instructional materials and classroom resources
- Collaborate with teachers, therapists (speech, OT, PT), and other service providers
- Maintain student confidentiality in compliance with FERPA and district policies
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience working with children or adolescents in special education is required
- Knowledge of special education practices and student behavior support strategies
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Physical ability to lift, position, and assist students, including transfers to and from wheelchairs
- Ability to assist with toileting, feeding, and personal care tasks
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the school day
- Ability to respond quickly in situations requiring student safety
- Patience, empathy, and a respectful, supportive approach with adolescents
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced school environment
- Comfort working with assistive technology, including AAC devices
