Position Description:
The Research & Development (R&D) Chemist will research, design, and perform experiments related to the development and improvement of company products. This position reports to the Laboratories and Research Manager (LRM).
Responsibilities:
o Research and conduct experiments in accordance with company's product development and innovation strategy.
o Formulate product prototypes and evaluate them for chemical and physical properties, performance, and stability. Improve current formulations of products when needed.
o Conduct reverse engineering activities and analysis of competitor's products.
o Research and recommend testing at 3rd party facilities to support product development and reverse engineering.
o Remain up to date and current on scientific trends in the market, formulations, materials, ingredients, etc., through scientific journals and technical papers.
o Document and communicate experiment conclusions to appropriate stakeholders.
o Maintain research chemical inventory and related SDS's.
o Ensure the company's research laboratories are maintained in a safe, clean, and organized manner.
o Establish strong, trusting, and mutually respectful relationships with other staff, customers and vendors.
o Other research and development activities as directed by the Laboratories and Research Manager.
• Supporting
o Scale-ups from prototype to full scale manufacture
o Field evaluation of experimental products.
o Training of new Chemists as directed.
o Other staff and departments as needed.
o Create and maintain accurate and timely written reports of experiments, procedures, and investigations related to research and development.
o Other Reports as may be required.
• Compliance:
o Safety of Chemists and other staff
• Supervises:
Interns (if assigned)
Education and Experience:
•Master's or PhD degree in chemistry, material science, engineering, or other closely related science is highly preferred.
Specialization areas preferred:
- Architectural coatings or paints
- Concrete admixtures
- Water-based Emulsions
- Acrylate based polymers
Skill Requirements:
• Hands-on chemical laboratory experience required.
• Experience in basic statistics and designing experiments required.
• Experience with water-based coatings formulations.
• Experience with water-based emulsion and dispersion formulations a plus.
• Experience with concrete chemistry and concrete admixture chemistry a plus.
• Strong analytical and mathematic skills related to chemistry and formulations.
• Excellent computer software skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel required. PowerPoint a plus.
• Excellent time management skills.
• Excellent communication and technical writing skills.
• Able to work as a one-person team for extended periods of time.
• Capable of managing stress while supplying services, achieving goals, and meeting deadlines.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to work standing up and/or walking for extended periods of time.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted.
• Non-smoker/non-vaper.
