As the Senior Mechanical Engineer on-site in Colorado Springs, you will serve as the lead technical resource for all design and mechanical problem-solving activities. This role combines hands-on design engineering with shop floor collaboration, providing technical guidance to production teams while supporting project-based customization of truck and van-mounted equipment. You'll operate with significant independence—serving as the go-to problem solver and engineering advocate for site leadership.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, integration, and testing of complex truck and van-mounted equipment.
- Develop detailed manufacturing drawings and simplified customer approval drawings using SolidWorks.
- Design and modify truck bodies, accessories, and custom components from a range of materials.
- Create and update electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic schematics as required.
- Collaborate closely with operations to troubleshoot manufacturing challenges and optimize design for manufacturability.
- Serve as the on-site engineering expert for resolving technical and process-related issues.
- Develop and maintain product documentation, including manuals, assembly instructions, and design standards.
- Act as a liaison between Sales, Manufacturing, and Suppliers to ensure customer and production requirements are met.
- Provide mentorship, technical support, and hands-on assistance on the shop floor.
- Perform additional duties and lead special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline (or equivalent experience).
- Proficiency in SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software.
- Skilled in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience preferred.
- 10+ years of mechanical design engineering experience, ideally within the automotive, truck body, or mobile equipment industry.
- Strong hands-on experience supporting shop floor operations, with an ability to bridge design and production.
- Working knowledge of 12-volt automotive electrical systems.
- Familiarity with mobile hydraulic systems at a conceptual or high level preferred.
- Background in welding, sheet metal forming, and mechanical assembly.
- Experience with SolidWorks PDM and/or AutoCAD a plus.
- Highly self-directed and confident operating independently with minimal oversight.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting mindset with practical, 'shop floor' application.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to influence across departments.
- Organized, proactive, and adaptable to shifting priorities and project scopes.
- Comfortable representing engineering interests and advocating for project needs within a cross-functional environment.
