Description

Job ID: 114952

The Leonardo DRS Naval Power Systems business is a trusted provider of innovative naval gas and hybrid power systems, control technology and support solutions for the U.S. Navy and navies around the world.

Job Summary

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer – FEA & Shock, you will be a technical leader in structural dynamics, shock survivability, and vibration performance for complex, mission-critical equipment. You will partner with multidisciplinary engineering teams to design, analyze, test, and qualify products that meet rigorous military requirements—from early concept development through production and fielded systems.

This is an onsite position located in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. It is an opportunity for a hands-on engineering expert who enjoys solving difficult structural challenges, mentoring others, and seeing their work make a direct impact on naval capability and readiness.

What You Will Do

You will work as an integral member of an integrated project team, exercising sound technical judgment and discretion to solve complex engineering problems. We are looking for a subject matter expert who can guide and mentor junior engineers while continuing to expand the team's shock and vibration design capability.

Key responsibilities include executing and leading shock and structural analyses on large, complex assemblies, including:

  • Static structural analysis
  • Transient dynamic analysis
  • Shock response spectrum analysis
  • U.S. Navy Dynamic Design Analysis Method (DDAM) analysis in accordance with T9070-AJ-DPC-120/3010
  • Linear and nonlinear contact analysis
  • Normal mode analysis
  • Force response analysis

Success in this role requires the ability to break down complicated technical challenges and develop innovative, practical solutions that meet program requirements without adding unnecessary weight, complexity, cost, or manufacturing risk. You will apply a strong understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, materials, manufacturability, and system-level performance to influence product decisions throughout the development lifecycle.

You will clearly document and communicate technical and programmatic information—both verbally and in writing—to technical teams, program leadership, executive stakeholders, manufacturing partners, and customers. Regular customer interaction is part of this role, and you will confidently represent Leonardo DRS in discussions with the U.S. Navy and other external stakeholders.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing, analyzing, and reporting project milestones, technical risks, and analysis status
  • Developing accurate estimates to complete analysis efforts and project deliverables
  • Supporting design reviews, manufacturing activities, qualification testing, and field-related efforts
  • Designing with safety, reliability, and manufacturability at the forefront
  • Providing technical leadership and mentorship to less-experienced engineers
  • Supporting programs from concept development through qualification, production, and field deployment
Education & Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related technical discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience evaluating stresses, deflections, and relative deflections in turbomachinery assemblies, large rotating machinery assemblies, motors, generators, and related components such as rotors, stators, turbine casings, and bases
  • Expert knowledge of MIL-S-901D IC2 and MIL-DTL-901, with familiarity in shock and vibration testing and experience working with shock and vibration test facilities
  • Expert-level experience using ANSYS Mechanical / Workbench for finite element analysis
  • Demonstrated excellence in mechanical design fundamentals, including material selection and structural design
  • Proven ability to independently drive product development from concept through qualification and fielded systems
  • Experience applying system-level thinking and systems engineering principles and methods
  • Experience with the design and analysis of large welded fabrications and complex rotating assemblies.

Other Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing rotating machinery and associated manufacturing drawings
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes including casting, forging, welding, machining, and factory assembly best practices
  • Experience with ANSYS APDL / ANSYS Classic
  • Proficiency with CAD tools, preferably Siemens NX and/or SolidWorks
  • Experience with MSC analysis and pre-/post-processing tools, including NASTRAN, PATRAN, and APEX
  • Experience using shock and vibration analysis support programs such as UERD and SIMPLE
  • Familiarity with program management tools such as MS Project and/or Agile project management tools such as Jira
  • Experience executing engineering projects for the U.S. military
  • Active security clearance.
