Job Summary

DRS NPS has an immediate need for a Systems Engineer to provide a coordinated approach to challenging and innovative technical projects, specifically for the development of ship-based electric plant and propulsion systems for marine applications. This exciting technical role is responsible for working as part of cross-disciplinary teams focused on system-level architecture, interface control, and associated technical analyses. This role requires understanding of the technical vision and an ability to capture, develop, integrate key requirements across the project team in the appropriate systems engineering tools.


This pivotal position includes substantive contribution to planning and technical execution of large system integration projects, primarily with steam turbine systems.  The day-to-day focus is on working in a multidisciplinary engineering teams ranging from 3-10+ engineers with direct individual contributions to project work as required.  Critical to success in the role is the ability to understand technical challenges, directly work in the engineering team to find innovative solutions to problems, and clearly document / present status within the team, to project leadership, and to other functions (including executive management). As part of regular activities, this role may have significant supplier and customer interaction.


The ideal candidate is a system-thinking engineer who can positively drive detailed activities across multiple disciplines (mechanical, electrical, software, etc). 
 

Job Responsibilities
  • Drive the day-to-day execution of large system integration projects for ship-based steam electric plants and propulsion systems used in naval and commercial marine applications.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary technical teams to architect, analyze, and specify requirements/interfaces for steam turbine generators and related auxiliary equipment.
  • Integrate components into broader thermo-fluid power systems, including but not limited to:
    • Turbines into power plants
    • Heat exchangers into propulsion machinery
  • Represent DRS with customers and suppliers, as needed
  • Operate across the Systems Engineering "V" to decompose top-level requirements into detailed sub-system / component-level requirements and verify compliance via analysis, test, etc.
  • Clearly communicate, orally and in writing, project status and technical information to technical and non-technical individuals
  • Use and manage systems engineering toolsets
  • Ability to design to cost targets, while meeting key performance requirements
  • Contribute directly to project success through individual technical contributions, as required
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree from a 4 year accredited college or university in Mechanical, Systems, Marine, or similar engineering
  • 5 years of demonstrated experience 
  • Experience in lumped parameter heat balance and analysis
  • Experience in modeling thermal fluid systems in modern, multi-physics computational solvers such as Simulink, AxCycle, Simcenter, etc.
  • Experience with system-level thinking and system engineering principles/methods
  • Strong sense of ownership and high level of accountability for assigned projects
  • US citizen

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience / interest working with US Navy or International Navies on designing and commissioning thermo-fluid systems, including:
    • Steam Plants for shipboard and shoreside applications
    • Cooling water systems for propulsion motors, turbines, generators, test cells, and other cooling circuits
    • Hydraulic systems
    • Other fluid / gas flow systems
  • Experience in multi variate analysis and system / solution optimization
  • Experience in the commissioning of marine electric plant and propulsion system equipment from installation during ship construction through builder's trials and acceptance trials.
  • Experience with the development of electric machines, electric motor/drive systems, electro-mechanical systems, or other power machinery
  • Proven track record of being able to stretch outside one's comfort zone, as needed, to get the job done
  • Active security clearance

U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
