Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services and the Laboratory Administrative Director, the Laboratory QA Coordinator is responsible for the coordination, monitoring, and oversight of the laboratory quality assurance program. The QA Coordinator is also responsible for ensuring that all requirements have been met before adding a test to the laboratory test menu and prior to go-live, to include researching appropriate CPT/HCPC codes and both commercial and governmental payer rules associated with billing for this test.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree from a Regionally Recognized Accredited College or University with Courses in the Physical and Biological Sciences.
Minimum Years of Experience: 5 Years of Clinical Laboratory Experience as a Certified MT/MLS
Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional): Supervisory Experience or BOC Specialty Certification (i.e., SBB, SC, SH, SM)
Required Certifications/Licensure: Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MT/MLS) from the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) or an equivalent state or governmental certification including:
- National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA) or 
- American Medical Technologies (AMT) or
- American Association of Bioanalysts Board of Registry (AAB)  
National certification may be at the medical laboratory technician (MLT) level or a categorical certification in a recognized discipline of clinical laboratory science (i.e., chemistry, hematology, blood bank, microbiology). With a categorical certification, the employee's practice at LMC will be limited to the category or categories listed by the certifying board.
Required Training: Demonstrated skills specific to areas of laboratory QA
 

Essential Functions
  • Assists the Laboratory Administrative Director in on-going coordination and oversight of Laboratory Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement (QA/PI) activities; interfacing the activities with other hospital departments and designated affiliated laboratory services. Serves as a liaison on appropriate hospital committees as directed.
  • Coordinates the Laboratory QA/PI program and meeting including the Laboratory QA/PI Dashboard.
  • Coordinates the QA/PI activities of the various technical sections to ensure each section program is properly structured, up-to-date, that all applicable section surveys are ordered,  and related follow up is properly documented.
  • Coordinates the proficiency testing program of the various technical sections to ensure each program is properly structured, up to date, and related follow up is properly documented.
  • Serves as primary contact for COLA, CAP, CLSI, DNV and other professional, regulatory and accreditation bodies.
  • Provides oversight for the Laboratory Document Control system with emphasis on correct form, format, and content based on CLSI standards. Serves as system Administrator.  Oversees upgrades to the system, adds/removes users and maintains reading lists and document approval ladders.
  • Works with the Laboratory management team in the development of goals and objectives for the laboratory.
  • Prepares QA reports for the medical laboratory director and laboratory administrative director reflecting trends of various laboratory service complaints/problems as well as quarterly summary reports for the current QA monitors and indicators.
  • Assists technical supervisors as needed with quality assurance topics and reporting; serves as a resource for quality assurance projects.
  • Participates in LMC ISO program activities.
  • Participates in hospital critical tests monitoring committee (prepares reports for lab administrative director and attends meeting as needed).
  • Investigates complaints and/or occurrence reports related to laboratory testing services from physicians, patients, and other hospital departments. Offers suggestions for process improvements to prevent future occurrences.
  • Consults with the laboratory management team as appropriate to resolve complaints and service issues.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Communicates resolution of complaints or concerns timely to physicians, patients and other hospital departments.
  • Monitors trends of reported/observed service issues and works with the laboratory management team and other hospital departments to resolve problems, improve performance and interdisciplinary cooperation.
  • Performs root cause analysis on errors as needed to identify source and prevent future recurrences.
  • Works with Supervisors and front line staff on Process Improvement projects to increase efficiency and prevent waste across the teams and sections.  Also to prevent errors and ensure quality of patient care.
  • Familiar with LEAN and Six Sigma concepts; uses them to analyze and optimize lab workflows.
  • Coordinates with the LIS team and Patient Financial Services to identify and assign the appropriate CPT/HCPC coding for laboratory test billing to include.
  • Stays abreast of lab fee schedules and reimbursement rules for both government and commercial payors to help evaluate the laboratory's cost vs revenue for adding a test to our menu.
  • Assists with writing and revision of General Lab policies and procedures as needed.
  • Orientation of new employees to include introduction to general laboratory and hospital policies and procedures.  Basic introduction to lab safety.
  • Participates in Daily Operations Supervisor rotation.
  • Participates in instruction of students in the Medical Laboratory Science program.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
