Job Summary

To maintain a high quality of work performance in Pharmacy Services. Responsible for day to day operations and technical functions associated with the Department of Pharmacy Services. Is the "go to" person for everyday questions and required on the spot decisions needed to ensure safe, efficient, and effective Pharmacy Services.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: B.S. or Pharm D in pharmacy from a US accredited college of pharmacy
Minimum Years of Experience: 2 Years of pharmacy experience
Substitutable Education & Experience: None
Required Certifications/Licensure: Licensed as a pharmacist for the State of South Carolina
Required Training: Hospital pharmacy residency training or equivalent experience

Essential Functions
  • Performs all duties of the Registered Pharmacist
  • General duties of Lead Pharmacist:         
    • Seeks assistance from Manager/Director when required. Provides feedback to the  pharmacy management team.          
    • Responsible for correcting any policy violations immediately and reporting them to  the pharmacy manager or director as appropriate.       
    • Understands the importance of customer service and ensures that the pharmacy is  providing exemplary customer service.          
    • Understands the importance of standardization of processes and leads others to  adhere to department standards and minimize variation of process.      
    • Cross covers for other lead pharmacists as required.      
    • Coordinates staffing assignment adjustments as needed to maximize service  (includes deliveries, Pyxis refills, etc.).         
    • Coordinates staff replacements as required.        
    • Authority to call pharmacy employees for staffing during urgent situations, sickness,  or staffing shortage which impedes ability to maintain service levels.   
    • As needed may make temporary adjustments to schedule of individuals (start time,  end time, urgent leave during a shift, etc.)       
    • Initiates and coordinates the process for equipment, facility and   automation/technology repairs by working with appropriate department/vendor  (engineering, help desk, vendor service center) to maximize service.      
    • Ensures that all CS discrepancies are resolved on the shift they occurred.   
    • Ensures that all DEA, Board of Pharmacy and DHEC regulations are followed.  
    • Coordinates work flow on the shift to ensure timely accurate service.   
    • Reports to subsequent shifts appropriate information to achieve service standards.  
    • Is the shift “problem solver” and “go to” person for assigned areas of responsibility.  
    • Ensures that personnel comply with regulatory requirements.    
    • Ensures that personnel comply with applicable P&P.     
    • Ensures compliance with Service/Quality standards.      
    • Authority to initiate necessary work / repairs to equipment and/or facility to maintain  pharmacy service (ex. Chemo Hood, Laminar Flow Hood, door locks, computers, Fast  Find, etc.)            
    • Sets priorities for staff during shift for assigned areas of responsibility.    
    • Ensures that all appropriate logs are kept up to date in areas of responsibility.  
    • Directs individual staff members to specific tasks as required to ensure completion of  all shift duties.

  • Must utilize good judgment and makes appropriate decisions above and beyond that  required of staff pharmacists.         
  • Removes oneself from pot stirring and gossip activities as these are not team building  activities. Discourages these activities among staff.       
  • Provides input to Pharmacy Manager/Director on personnel matters including:    
    • Competence            
    • Performance            
    • Praise             
    • Discipline             
    • Hiring             
    • Discharge          
    • Leads with a positive attitude.  Leads change with a positive attitude. Is a part of the  management team and supports the management team's objectives with a positive  attitude.              
      • Makes order turnaround time a priority.        
      • Responsible for communication and training of all employees with duties in their  area regardless of shift.          
      • Carry out requests of management team to completion.      
      • Shows ability to complete delegated tasks with dependability and with little direction.  Communicates back to management team without prompting.
  • Ensure Hazardous Waste or Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals are discarded, stored, and managed with other compatible waste streams in containers that are properly labeled and closed prior to being shipped offsite for proper disposal.  Initial RCRA training is received within 6 months of the hire date and continuing with annual RCRA training.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
