Title and Summary
Applied Researcher - Forecasting The Mastercard Economics Institute (MEI) is an economics lab powering scale at Mastercard by owning economic thought leadership in support of Mastercard's efforts to build a more inclusive and sustainable digital economyMEI was launched in 2020 to analyze economic trends through the lens of the consumer to deliver tailored and actionable insights on economic issues for customers, partners and policymakers
MEI is composed of a team of economists and data scientists that utilize & synthesize the anonymized and aggregated data from the Mastercard network together with public data to bring powerful insights to life, in the form of 1:1 presentations, global thought leadership, media participation, and commercial work through the company's product suites
We are looking for a forecaster to join the Applied Research team at the Mastercard Economics Institute. The Applied Research team is at the forefront of innovations to our Economics products and insights. In this role you will deliver insights using rich, multi-faceted datasets, apply and develop statistical and machine learning tools, and work with both internal and external stakeholders at leading companies across different sectors.
Key responsibilities
• Lead the team's forecasting research agenda and oversee modeling efforts across multiple forecasting projects
• Develop models across the entire pipeline – from data ingestion and feature engineering to model validation and communicating the results to key stakeholders
• Build, backtest, validate, and monitor forecasting models
• Apply cutting-edge statistical and machine learning tools to uncover patterns in large data sets, helping prototype and develop data products
• Guide usage of forecasting models and of scientific best practices across the team
• Partner with data scientists and engineers to deploy models to production
• Continuously keep up on the sectoral trends, research methodologies, and experiment with new approaches
• Participate in every stage of research projects from briefing to ideation, to content development to draft/prototyping, testing, feedback collection and finalization
About you
• Creative & passionate about research, economics, data, technology, and its applications, with an entrepreneurial mindset
• Deep expertise in one or more languages like Python, R
• Demonstrated success in modeling with big data and experience with tools such as Spark, Hadoop, Hive is strongly preferred
• Experience in time series analysis and at least one of the following: Machine learning (supervised and unsupervised), NLP, and text analysis on economic and financial data sets
• Forecasting experience of at least 2 years, ideally in a tech or financial setting
• Ph.D. or Master's in a quantitative field
• Previous client facing experience is a plus
• Excellent at managing multiple projects and staying calm under pressure
