Title and Summary

Applied Researcher - Macro The Mastercard Economics Institute (MEI) is an economics lab powering scale at Mastercard by owning economic thought leadership in support of Mastercard's efforts to build a more inclusive and sustainable digital economy

MEI was launched in 2020 to analyze economic trends through the lens of the consumer to deliver tailored and actionable insights on economic issues for customers, partners and policymakers

MEI is composed of a team of economists and data scientists that utilize & synthesize the anonymized and aggregated data from the Mastercard network together with public data to bring powerful insights to life, in the form of 1:1 presentations, global thought leadership, media participation, and commercial work through the company's product suites

We are looking for a macroeconomist to join the Applied Research team at the Mastercard Economics Institute. The Applied Research team is at the forefront of innovations to our Economics products and insights. In this role you will deliver macroeconomic insights using our rich, multi-faceted datasets, and apply macroeconometric and machine learning tools to develop and maintain our suite of macroeconomic models.

Key responsibilities
• Lead the team's macroeconometric research agenda and deliverables
• Build, backtest, validate, and monitor our macroeconomic models, including macro scenarios, and communicating the results to key stakeholders
• Research and implement innovative econometric and machine learning tools for forecasting, impact evaluation and index creation
• Work closely with other researchers and data scientists to guide usage of macroeconomic features, models and forecasts
• Continuously partner with other researchers and data scientists
• Partner with data scientists and engineers to deploy models to production

About you
• Creative & passionate about research, economics, data, technology, and its applications, with an entrepreneurial mindset
• Strong foundation in macroeconomic modeling approaches and demonstrated success in working with big data
• Experience with spatial modeling or mixed-frequency time series is a plus
• Expertise in one or more of Python, R, Julia, C++ or similar languages
• Experience in SQL and big data frameworks (Spark, Hadoop, Hive) is preferred
• Experience in time series forecasting, factor models, Bayesian econometrics and/or machine learning forecasting
• Ph.D. or Master's in Economics or in a quantitative field with experience in macroeconomic modeling
• Strong collaborator and independent thinker
• Evidence of creativity/innovation/unorthodox thinking in data-driven economics

In line with Mastercard's total compensation philosophy and assuming that the job will be performed in the US, the successful candidate will be offered a competitive base salary based on location, experience and other qualifications for the role and may be eligible for an annual bonus or commissions depending on the role.
