Senior Counsel, Privacy, AI & Data Responsibility Overview:Mastercard is committed to responsible innovation and has embedded Privacy, AI Governance, and Data Responsibility into the core of its business strategy. As part of this commitment, Mastercard has established a world‑class AI Legal Center of Excellence and is expanding its global bench of legal experts to support Mastercard's rapidly-growing development and use of AI. We are now seeking to hire a Senior Counsel – Privacy, AI & Data Responsibility for the AI Legal Center of Excellence, to be based in Singapore.
Role and Responsibilities:
The Senior Counsel – Privacy, AI & Data Responsibility will serve as a key legal advisor shaping Mastercard's approach to Responsible AI and AI Governance, Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs), and AI‑driven commercial initiatives. This role reports to the Senior Managing Counsel, Privacy, AI & Data Responsibility and is a member of the AI Legal Center of Excellence and the Global Privacy, AI & Data Responsibility (PAIR) team. This role will be critical to Mastercard's growth, sitting at the intersection of data, privacy, AI and advanced technologies and providing legal guidance to leaders similarly navigating the nexus of those areas. This role will be based in Singapore.
Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs)
- Advise on the design, deployment, and use of PETs (e.g., differential privacy, synthetic data, secure multi‑party computation, homomorphic encryption, federated learning).
- Assess PETs‑enabled data use cases and help implement privacy‑by‑design in PETs‑related product development.
- Help develop internal standards, guidelines, and training for PETs adoption and governance.
- Partner with Mastercard's PETs Center of Excellence and the AI and Data Office to find innovative ways to use PETs to drive privacy-compliant AI adoption and product development.
AI Governance & Responsible AI
- Provide AI legal and privacy expertise to key initiatives furthering Mastercard AI Governance.
- Partner with Mastercard's AI and Data Office to support AI strategy and execution, including big bets involving advanced AI and data products.
- Monitor and interpret emerging global AI regulations and incorporate requirements into legal guidance, governance processes, and enterprise frameworks, with a focus on Singapore and the AP region.
- Collaborate with Public Policy and Government Affairs teams on engagement efforts on evolving AI regulatory and policy initiatives in the AP region.
AI‑Related Commercial & Technology Transactions
- Draft, negotiate, and advise on AI‑related commercial agreements with customers, partners, data providers, and vendors, providing pragmatic, business‑aligned advice on risk allocation, IP considerations, model training, data licenses, and compliance obligations.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
- Partner closely with product, engineering, data science, compliance, information security, and operations teams.
- Provide training and thought leadership to elevate awareness of Privacy, PETs, and AI governance across Mastercard.
- Help scale legal frameworks and operational processes needed for safe, compliant, and innovative AI use.
All About You / Experience:
Required
- Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent with active bar membership.
- Demonstrated experience advising on AI governance, AI regulations, or AI‑related legal issues.
- Strong understanding of global data protection laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) and privacy‑by‑design principles.
- Experience with commercial contracting, including technology, data, licensing, or AI‑related agreements.
- Good understanding of AI technologies, including Generative AI, agentic systems, and model lifecycle considerations.
- Ability to translate complex technical topics — such as PETs or model architectures — into actionable legal guidance.
- Excellent drafting, negotiation, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Preferred
- CIPP/A and AIGP certification.
- Experience advising on PETs implementations or advanced privacy engineering concepts.
- Technical literacy in data science, machine learning, or cloud technologies.
- Experience in a global, matrixed organization or highly regulated environment.
- Demonstrated leadership in scaling governance or compliance programs.
