Role
The Vice President of Policy Communications and Corporate Affairs, reporting to the Senior Vice President of Communications, North America, will serve as Mastercard's lead for U.S. policy communications and corporate affairs. This individual will oversee public policy narratives, corporate positioning, crisis and issues management, and executive visibility, ensuring cohesive and compelling engagement with key stakeholders, including policymakers, media, regulators, and customers.
This role is ideal for a seasoned public affairs professional with deep expertise in Washington, D.C., coupled with corporate communications and crisis management experience. The successful candidate will leverage Mastercard's global impact to build trusted relationships and amplify its role as a leader in payments innovation.
Key Responsibilities
Policy Communications
· Lead Mastercard's public policy and regulatory communications, partnering with the Washington, D.C., legal and government relations teams to articulate Mastercard's policy positions, navigating emerging issues under a new administration and Congress.
· Build Mastercard's reputation as an advocate for innovation, cyber-security and economic development, collaborating with communications, marketing and business unit teams.
· Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with policy-focused media and analysts to ensure visibility and credibility in Washington, D.C., and beyond.
· Collaborate with internal teams to proactively identify emerging policy issues and develop messaging and engagement strategies.
Corporate Communications
· Shape and enhance Mastercard's corporate reputation by integrating policy and innovation narratives into a cohesive external strategy.
· Lead messaging for high-profile announcements, including new products, partnerships, and market milestones.
· Oversee external communications campaigns, media relations, and executive thought leadership platforms to advance Mastercard's corporate value story.
Crisis and Issues Management
· Serve as a key leader in crisis communications, providing counsel to senior leadership during sensitive situations.
· Develop and maintain a crisis communication plan, ensuring readiness and alignment across teams during critical events.
· Act as a spokesperson during major issues and provide guidance on real-time messaging and engagement strategies.
Executive Visibility
· Strategically position senior executives as thought leaders through speaking engagements, editorial content, and social media amplification.
· Oversee the development of executive presentations, speeches, and opinion pieces to align with Mastercard's innovation and policy narratives.
· Partner with internal teams to identify high-impact opportunities to highlight executive leadership.
Team Leadership and Measurement
· Partner with and inspire a team of communications professionals, fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture.
· Use measurement tools and analytics to assess the impact of communications initiatives and continuously refine strategies for optimal results.
· Partner with the global communications team to ensure alignment and integration of regional and global narratives.
All About You
· Senior-level communications professional with experience spanning corporate public affairs, agency leadership, and/or journalism.
· Demonstrated expertise in managing public policy communications and engaging with Washington, D.C., media and stakeholders.
· Proven track record in crisis and issues management, with the ability to navigate complex, high-pressure situations.
· Exceptional writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to create compelling content across traditional, digital, and social media channels.
· Strong relationships with media outlets, industry influencers, and policymakers, particularly in D.C. and New York.
· Experience managing teams and influencing across a matrixed organization.
· Entrepreneurial mindset with a curiosity for emerging trends, technologies, and business challenges.
· Excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills, capable of building trust and consensus among diverse stakeholders.
