General Summary of Position
Administrative responsibility and accountability for the management and direction of the operational personnel financial and marketing activities of the department. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Health philosophy policies procedures and standards.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Selects trains orients and assigns department staff. Develops standards of performance evaluates performance and conducts performance management planning. Initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions. Maintains ongoing communication with subordinates to review programs provide feedback discuss new developments and exchange information.
  • Completes annual performance appraisals in a timely manner ensuring that the appraisals reflect the individual's ability to meet performance expectations. Counsels associates effectively and collaborates with Sr. Leadership and Human Resources to utilize the disciplinary process.
  • Assumes on-site responsibility for the day-to-day functioning of the Sterile Processing Department.
  • Develops and contributes to the achievement of established department goal and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Ensures compliance with hospital/facility policies and procedures and governmental/accreditation regulations.
  • Develops and implements processes to assure OR efficiencies in first case start time equipment and supply availability supply cost management and reduction alignment to system product contracts.
  • Develops maintains and uses management and statistical reporting systems to enhance patient care accountability and efficient management of departmental resources. Develops a departmental dashboard and uses system dashboard to evaluate results and align personnel and resources.
  • Establishes and oversees methods for preparing handling and storing sterile equipment and materials in collaboration with Risk Management Infection Prevention and the Operating Room. Maintains records as required by the Joint Commission. Ensures proper case cart preparation handling and timely delivery to the Operating Room in collaboration with Materials Management
  • Exemplifies Patient Experience services standards SPIRIT Values service line philosophy mission and values and actively participates in Patient Quality and Safety standards and tasks.
  • Oversees the management of administrative services including purchasing supply and support functions for the Sterile Processing departments working in collaboration with Materials Management.
  • Oversees and ensures proper sterilization assembly and storage of medical supplies instrumentation and equipment. Conducts monthly department meetings and in-service for new equipment and instruments. Identifies individual staff development needs and provides appropriate resources to meet the needs.
  • Oversees and supervises the maintenance and preparation of records files and other documents as required by regulatory bodies.
  • Responsible in collaboration with the Business Director Perioperative Services for activities to maintain compliance with regulatory bodies including Joint Commission DCRA OSHA and Office of Environmental Health and Safety.
  • Minimal Qualifications
    Education
    • Bachelor's degree in related field required or
    • Master's degree in Health Services Administration Business or related field preferred preferred
    Experience
    • 8-10 years with 3 years progressive Sterile Processing Administrative & clinical experience required and
    • 5-7 years in an acute care hospital setting required
    • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
    Licenses and Certifications
    • Sterile Processing certification required
    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
    • Comprehensive knowledge of Sterile Processing and demonstrated leadership competencies. Ability to plan direct execute and evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of meeting daily surgical and sterile processing requirements across the organization. Excellent conceptual synthesizing and analytical skills. Current working knowledge of automated materials management and financial/information management reporting systems. Excellent human resource management skills and the ability to interact with a wide range of disciplines and oversees broad management of all resources. Flexible and adaptable to change and as needed assumes the role of change agent. Excell public relations and communication skills. Ability to deal with high stress associated with surgical services and organizational needs. Works collaboratively across the organization region and within the system Perioperative Governance direction(s).

    USD $80,995.00 - USD $152,027.00 /Yr.
